imo, I'd say just ask your master what a good stretch to improve it is. Surely he didn't have incredible hip flexibility at the beginning.
I do TKD and its only through years of training that I can probably do turning kicks and theres a significant onus on stretching. Also, do you mean kicking sideways (as in standing there, kick to your immediate left or right) or bringing a kick up from the side to the front? I've always found the groin stretch to be the pretty good (sit on floor, feet together, hands on feet, push knees downwards)

Also, 12.1 is pretty good. I am surprised that no-one else was quicker than 14 though. How many people were running?
