To smoke or not to smoke

I have been trying to stop smoking but this is reallllly hard. I don't even like the smell of my own smoke and I still do it. The doc has me on some quitting cigarette medicine, but it isn't working very well. I try not to think about smoking and then I end up obsessing about it. Has anyone smoked and quit? My mom smoked for a long time and ( Read more... )

You do it because nicotine is more addictive and harder to quit than heroine, and yet is still legal. It's not your fault that it's difficult, but there are options. If the medicine you're on now isn't working, talk to yoru doctor about changing it. One may end up working a lot better for you than another, it depends on your body.

From what I understand, taking a walk, talking on the phone with someone, and chewing sugar-free gum can all help when the cravings hit. Plus you need to recognize your smoking behavior-- the times when you're used to pulling one out and lighting up. After a meal, while watching TV, things like that. At those times the pull is more of habit than craving, but that makes it easier to push away because you can recognize it and find some way to deal with it so it goes away.

Good luck on quitting. I know you can do it! d^_^b

I smoked from age 17-21. Ask me at work sometime how I quit; it's a long, painful story. Might not help you, but it will probably make you feel better about your situation.

now, just remember that the most important thing to learn is that you never fail, just learn what doesn't work. I simply quit. bought a pack of smokes, got home, stuck them in my bedroom draw and haven't touched them since. however, I gained a "little" weight. 90 lbs to be exact. so much for beach weather wear. but, decide what is more important to you, quit smoking or losing weight? You can do both, but its hard.
go for it.

*sigh* I have to do both. Being diabetic as well, I can't let my diet get out of control. If I start posting some crazy ass nonsense, it's because I've probably lost my mind in this venture. Thanks for the encouragement.

I quit last July. I got really sick and didn't want to look at a cig for a week, so I just kept it up.

No more marlboro lights! Oh how I wish I could just not smoke and be okay about it. BTW, are you wanting to go on a cruise still?

Yes! When can you go?

Well first we need to decide where we want to go. Like the caribean or an alaskan cruise. Then decide how much money we want to spend on this. If we can get a good bargain, I can probably arrange to take off anytime. How about you?
