How do you work, America? (fact help, please?)

So, once again my European mind has encountered (and almost missed!) a point of ignorance. Help me out, please?

How does this booze-buying work again? You can get beer and softer booze at any supermarket but any harder stuff like vodka and whiskey is bought at a special liquor store, right ( Read more... )

Also, I'm not sure about other states, but here in Minnesota you can't buy alcohol before noon on Sundays. It's stupid. You have no idea how often I got yelled at by people wanting to buy their beer and/or wine coolers when I worked at Target, which has a grocery store in it (and those are the only alcoholic drinks sold in grocery stores in Minnesota). Yeah, that was tons of fun. :/

Also also, this might be helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alcohol_laws_of_the_United_States_by_state

Oh man. Stupid law, stupid people. :( But... so... you literally had to look at the clock when people wanted to buy beer on Sundays? This sounds like a cracky plot to me, to be honest! :D

Thank youuu! I already skimmed that list earlier -- it caused the firs big mind-boggle.

I live in Illinois and my local large grocery chain, Jewel, now has a full liquor department with hard alcohol as well as beer and wine.

I would not buy champagne at a Jewel only because I don't think their selection is good. There are a few good specialty wine shops that I frequent for good wine and champagne.

Yes, American attitudes towards drinking are very different than European ones, but it is what it is.

Lucky you! ;)

I suppose all these alcohol laws are easy to deal with if you grew up with them. I only have the outsider perspective.

That was an interesting topic!
I had no idea legislation about alcohol in USA is such a complicated matter.
Although I cannot offer any input on the subject, I can do a happy dance because I smell a fic coming :D

I knew the US is rather uptight with this topic but I also had no idea of the complexity of this. Not allowed to buy alcohol on certain times of the day, like sodoesrachael said? Superstrange concept to people unfamiliar with it.

Ooooh, but... ehm, patience, please? :x

For you? All the patience of the world!

It's so weird, to regulate alcohol so heavily. I am not in favour of that. You make alcohol a sort of forbidden fruit that inevitable seems so appealing, especially to young people.

Yes, exactly. I might not be in the US to see for myself, but I've seen the movies. ;D
