Pansies seem so old-fashioned, they're perfect for watercolors. I did look the book up, and saw that it's reproduces a handwritten gift from a man to his wife--how much in love he must have been :)
I know and it's so wonderful that lots of people can share something made with such love. I suppose the publishers must have photographed the manuscript pages because the artwork is all through the book - all 27 pages, that is.
There seem to be styles in flowers, like lilacs don't appear to be in fashion any more, which I greatly regret. I've been grateful that the pansies have endured. I have a fair number in my window boxes and some seedlings coming up that seeded themselves.
I adore pansies, unfortunately so do the deer and rabbits and I've given up on planting them in the yard.
I love lilacs too, we don't have enough sun to grow them, species rhododendrons are about the only bushes that will bloom here. There are very few manicured gardens in this area, most everyone lets their plants do what they want (or can) do--a few blocks from us is a house with a huge white lilac near the street. It must be 15 feet high or so and just as wide. It blooms each May untouched by human hands and gives off a whiff of scent each time I drive by.
Oh, that sounds beautiful! I wonder how old a lilac that big would be? My ideal garden would have a row of them - and three colours.
I've had no luck keeping pansies in the house. They would last a month or so and then just fade away, even though the cat didn't try to eat them, but in the window boxes they've done well. Perhaps an upstairs window box could be an option?
