The newcomer
“You’re under arrest!”
Hi, my name is Sakurai Sho, 27, Japanese and I work as a detective in the robbery district in Tokyo. My boss and even my colleagues claim that I’m the number one in our district. Without being full of myself, I have to admit that since I started to work, robbers and others criminals are quieter than before. I can’t help, I’m proud of myself. My job is the only thing I’m good at. I’m the kind of man who always fails. I’m really good at cooking, if cooking means burning everything even boiled water, and believe me: it’s possible! So yes, I’m proud of my job. Nobody can resist me.
Nobody except one person.
“Stop daydreaming, Detective-san. We both know who’s the strongest between us!”
That’s right. My worst enemy: The Miracle Boy.
I chase him for more than three years now. He’s fast, nimble, smart and he’s always making a fool of me and my men. He’s well known in our district and he must be proud of being our target number one! Every time I’m on the verge of catching him, he manages to escape. He’s like an eel, always slipping from my hands. He’s the Devil incarnate. I know one day or another I will get a hold of him.
There’s just a tiny, a ridiculous, a trivial problem…
“Ouch! Do-don’t push me this hard, Sho-chan!” Whispered The Miracle Boy as I banged him against the wall.
“So-sorry… But you’re so alluring in these outfits!” I reply before kissing him eagerly.
Yeah…The Miracle Boy is also my lover. Three months ago, I finally managed to corner The Miracle Boy, and I discovered at the same time that the one I hate the most and the one that owns my heart, were in fact the same person: Aiba Masaki. He’s not a bad guy, not at all. He’s a true angel. In fact, he had become a criminal because he was worried about me. My best friend and former partner, got shot during his work, and since that day, Masaki is always worried about me. When I’m home Masaki takes care of me, and when I work, The Miracle Boy is the one in charge. He’s such a nice person, isn’t he? Hum…I should stop here; I’m becoming all sentimental again.
So, without telling anyone, we started a new…shall I call it a game? Masaki really loves his “job” and despite all I can say, he’s still worried. Just like before, The Miracle Boy steals and I’m the one in charge of capture him. Of course, every time he succeeds in running away. That’s the only failure I’m proud of. I know it’s dangerous, but it’s also more stimulating! I really love my job.
But I would never have thought that our little secret would become more dangerous than stimulating…
*****
“Ah! Welcome. Please, please come inside.” Says Masaki joyful as always, opening the front door of our apartment.
“Hi Masaki-kun, hi Sho!” Greets Satoshi as he came inside, followed by his lover, Ninomiya Kazunari. It’s good to see Satoshi smiling again. Ohno Satoshi is my former partner, the one who got shot three years ago. And… Ninomiya Kazunari is the one who shoot. No, that’s wrong. The one who shoot at Satoshi is…
“Matsumoto-san, don’t stay outside!” Giggles Masaki as he pushes the so-called Matsumoto inside. No, you’re not dreaming: in the same house, two detectives and three criminals are joking and talking happily. At first, I didn’t understand why Satoshi forgave Ninomiya. After all, he was a criminal and nonetheless he was responsible of Satoshi’s wound. But, the heart has its reasons that reason ignores, right? And I have understood that the night I discovered Masaki’s secret and decided to let him free.
While Masaki is busy in the kitchen, I lead my guests in the living room and we start talking of our latest news. Satoshi and Ninomiya are living together since last month. They don’t call themselves lovers, but just looking at how they act with each other, I can guess how their relationship is going. I mean, you don’t look stealthily at another man just because ‘you’re friends’. And you don’t take his hand in yours, just because ‘you’re friend’. Moreover, you don’t take that man on your lap, play with his hair and peck his nape just because ‘you’re friends’. And I don’t talk about butt groping or the fact that they need to be together to ‘wash their hands’ in the bathroom.
Matsumoto still feels uneasy and guilty. I know he’s not a bad guy, I already knew when I saw the fear in his eyes the night he fired at Satoshi. The Matsupi Gang was really famous and feared, but they always made a point of honor of never killing people. They were robbers, not murderers. He’s calm, doesn’t talk a lot, but always the first to play dorks. Maybe a little too fashionable to my liking…
Masaki comes back from the kitchen, a plate full of handmade snacks in his hands and puts it on the coffee table in front of us, before coiling up against me in the armchair. I really love those moments: a free day, no work, no problem, just my friends, my lover and I talking freely. Alas, it doesn’t last.
“And how you’re work? Yesterday I read a report about The Miracle Boy. You’re still chasing him, aren’t you?” Asks me Satoshi, with an innocent smile. If only he knew… I clear my throat and I can feel Masaki who tenses on my lap. Satoshi and the others know nothing about our secret. I know he wouldn’t mind but the less people know, the less we’re in danger.
“Well…” I start, uneasy. “He’s strong, you know? But I’m sure that one day or another I’ll catch him.” I say, looking lovingly at Masaki who tries to hide his giggles by kissing my neck.
“Hum… That’s strange. Before you were always cursing him and wanted to see him dead. But now, it’s as if you’re praising him…” Stats Satoshi. It was more a personal reflection than an observation.
“And if I were you, Aiba-san, I would felt in danger… The way he’s talking about him, I think he’s in love with him. Maybe he lets him go on purpose. ” Adds Ninomiya with a strange voice as he brings his teacup to his lips. As if he knew something. We stop laughing at his comment and I know that Masaki is as uneasy as I am. The silence fills the room, I have to say something!
“Anyway…I’m a detective and a detective doesn’t fall in love with criminals!” Great, I made the situation worse than it was! Satoshi had taken Nino’s hand in his and looks at me with a serious but hurt sight.
“W-what I want to say is…that Masaki is the only one I love!” I stutter and to show that I really think what I’m saying, my hold around Masaki’s waist becomes stronger. I look at them as a child who’s holding his precious toy. They regard me for some seconds before bursting in laughter. Thanks God, I changed the mood! The rest of their visit went without any problem. We talked, drank, and ate happily, Satoshi told ‘funny stories’ about me and my legendary skills: how I have fallen in the sea as I was running after some rubbers, or when I have almost burnt our patrol car with a lighter…
“Bye-bye! Be careful on your way home!!” Masaki waves his hand happily before closing the door. He rests his back on the door and sighs with contentment. He then looks at me and I just melt when I see this smile and those sparkling eyes of his. He walks slowly and once he’s hugging me from behind, he spurs sensually “So…I’m your only one?” I can’t hold the soft gasp which gets over my lips and the chills running down my spine as I feel his warm breath against my ear. He kisses gently my right shoulder and I turn my head, my lips asking for a kiss. A kiss which would never come. Masaki puts his index finger on them and clicks his tongue in a provoking way.
“Who do you want? Me or Him?” He asks and I can picture the smirk he has on his face just by hearing his tone.
“Masaki, this is stupid you’re both.” I sigh, but can’t help myself from smiling softly. He really loves this game and I admit that I like it as well. I try to turn in his embrace but he holds me so strongly that I can’t move. He’s taller than me and when he’s playing like that, he’s also stronger.
“Sho-chan…tell me. Who do you want?” He hums in my ear; he truly enjoys this, isn’t he?
“Me?” He whispers as he kisses my collarbone. “Or…” His hot breath runs on the back of my neck as he moves his head from right to left. “…Him?” Now, he’s biting softly my left earlobe. I bit my lips and clench my fists, there’s no way I will answer, and I don’t want to please him while he’s teasing me. This is a game, and I will win!
“Sho-chan~” I can feel his hands brushing my stomach through my shirt. I have to change my mind or I’ll lose to him.
“Where…where are you…going…tonight?” I ask, but the tone of my voice doesn’t satisfy me. I feel his smile growing against my skin.
“You’ll see…” Still humming. He’s just like a child, and I’m his cat. A cat he enjoys teasing with a ball of wool he makes rolling in front of me. Except that he’s not a child but an adult- a perverted one- and I’m not a cat- well, I think. As if someone had heard my prayers, my phone rang, the one reserved for urgent calls. He lets me go and I run- not without difficulty- to reach my vest.
“Yes?” My voice is too high; I clear my throat and glare at Masaki who was giggling. “Yes, sir?”
“Sakurai, we’ve just received a note from The Miracle Boy. He will be at the Yoshimi Gallery at midnight.”
“What’s his target this time?” I can’t restrain myself from being serious. This is my job after all, and even if it’s fake, my instinct takes the lead.
“The Princess’ smile. We’re waiting for you.”
“Okay, boss, I’ll be right there.” I hang up and take my things. As I grab my necktie, I look at Masaki who’s resting his back against the wall, his arms crossed upon his chest, smiling brightly.
“What’s The Princess’ smile?” I ask.
“A painting. It was made by a French painter: Eric Charpentier. He’s not well-known, but some of his paintings are priceless.”
“I didn’t know you were interested in paintings? Why this one?” I say as I struggle with that damn necktie which doesn’t want to be tied!! Masaki leaves his wall and moves closer.
“Let me to it, you’re hopeless!” He laughs. “I really like it. I’m always captivated be her smile. You look like her, you know?”
“I…I’m not a girl!”
“No, but the way she’s smiling is exactly like yours. When I’ve made some research about the painting, I’ve learnt that she was named Anne-Marie De La Brume. A kind and pure princess who was always smiling and laughing. She was supposed to marry the King’s son of another country…I think it was Spain or something like that. But she was in love with one of her servants. Between her duty and her love, she had chosen her duty. The peace of her country came before her own happiness, and she accepted to marry the prince. However, she asked for a single date with the servant and of course her father refused. The day before her wedding, Eric Charpentier came to paint the face of the still virgin princess. She never smiled, not even once. But when her beloved servant came in the room, her face lighted up and the painter immortalized it.”
His voice is the only thing I can hear, and his face is the one thing I can see. He’s so concentrate when he’s telling this story, and the smile on his face is simple wonderful. He’s a romantic person and I know he loves those sentimental stories.
“That’s a nice story.” I say. And when he had finished tying my tie, I take him in my arms for a strong hug.
“Not really… The night before the wedding, the servant tried to kidnap Anne-Marie and was arrested at the doors of the castle. When the princess heard that the servant will be killed, she protected him with her body and died.” He says and pushed himself off of my embrace, to arrange the necktie one last time.
I swallow a little hardly and dare to ask “How…?”
“Decapitated by the executioner’s axe.” He says bluntly as he pulls tight the knot around my neck. Then he pecks my lips and pats my butt. “Okay, go! Don’t be late, I hate the wait.” He orders with a childish smile.
I know that my feet are moving, and I know that I’m now in my car but…Anne-Marie’s story is the only thing in my head. I loosen up a bit the knot before starting up the engine.
*****
I stop my car in front of the Yoshimi Gallery, everything is quiet, but I know that my men and my boss are waiting inside. When I came in, my boss almost jumped on me.
“Sakurai!! I was waiting!!” He says and slaps my back in a friendly way. He’s a good guy, but sometimes he freaks me out. His round face, with his big cheeks and his small black moustache are very disturbing. And his accent- I think he’s British- is really bad. I know that Europeans are touchy, but I think sometimes he’s exaggerating. Particularly when he slaps my butt while saying “Go! Go! Go! Darling!”
“Excuse me sir. I’ll be in position in a second.”
“Wait. There’s someone I want to introduce.” He says as he pushes me in the main room, where all our men are waiting. “This is Sano Daiki-san.”
The man in front of me…no…the young man, no. The young KID! He’s 18, maybe younger! He’s tall, dark hair, dark eyes and his shoulders are as sloppy as mine. When our eyes met, his face lightened up and he almost ran toward me. He took my hand in his and shook it powerfully.
“Sakurai-san!! It’s a pleasure! You know I’ve become a detective because of you! You’re a star you know? Please let’s be friends!!”
“Ah…hum…thanks…? Nice to meet you too…” I say, lost.
“He’s your new partner!” My boss says happily. I choked. Wait a minute; I don’t need a new partner. And even if I wanted one, it would be an old and experienced man! Not this kid.
“Boss… I don’t need a new partner. I like to work alone.” I almost cry.
“He’s a good one. With him I’m sure you’ll catch The Miracle Boy tonight!”
Masaki! I’ve totally forgotten this problem. There’s no way I would let this boy arrest my lover. This is bad, really bad. I have to tell Masaki, but I can’t he’s on his way and will arrive within a minute. My heart is beating faster, I can feel it. My head is becoming blank, I can’t find a solution. I need to calm down. Sho, just calm down. Breathe, one, two, three, and breathe, one, two, three and br…
The sound of glass breaking and falling on the floor, followed by a laugh. He’s here! Masaki is here!
In total panic I start to run and stop my men with a shout. “DON’T COME! HE’S MINE!” That’s always the reason I give and until now it worked. But…
“Wait Sakurai-san, I’ll go with you!” That boy shouts happily, and he runs- or gambols if you want my opinion, behind me.
I need to calm down. I need to find a plan. The doors open and close one after another. I’m near the Princess’ Smile’s room, and that stupid boy he’s still running behind me! Despite all my orders he’s still following me. One door left and we’ll be in the same room as Masaki. And I still have no plan!!
I open the door and I refrain myself from shouting his name or to get out. Daiki is behind me; I close the door and block it with my back. I can hear his bangs on the door.
“Sakurai-san, open the door! I want to help you!” His muffled voice comes through the door.
“SHUT UP! I SAID HE’S MINE! DON’T YOU DARE INTERFER!” I yell back, putting all my strength on my back. Masaki comes toward me, smiling. But his smile disappears when he sees my seriousness, or maybe it’s because I look panicked.
“What’s wrong Sho-chan?” He asks as he puts his hand above my head and helps me with the doors. His cute astonished eyes are right before mine. You know, he’s just like a little puppy discovering snow for the first time. Ah! But I should remain focused!
“Run away! He’s my new partner. Don’t let him sees you! Please, go!” I begged, the doors still banging against my back. Against all expectations, Masaki giggles and leans against me, his hand still on the doors. He pecks my lips several times.
“Masaki, this is not the time!”
“Who’s Masaki? I’m The Miracle Boy!” He spurs in my ears, and I can feel his leg sticking against my thigh. A chill runs down my spine against my will.
“Stop that! Ma-Masaki, I’m getting weaker!” I won’t resist any longer at this rate. Why can’t he simply leave?!
“Don’t worry Sho-chan. You never caught me in the past.” He laughs and kisses me eagerly. His mouth is warm and wet, and I can’t help myself from kissing him back. When his lips leave mine and decide to attack my earlobe, I can’t keep the moan which is at the edge of my lips.
“Please, Masaki. PLEASE!”
“Don’t you think this is exciting?” I can hear his husky voice, I can see his lips moving, I can feel his hand caressing my cock, but I can’t understand him at all. He’s in danger! What’s exciting?! I have enough! One of my hands leaves the door and I push him hard on the floor. He’s looking at me with his eyes wide open, and I can see his surprise. But I don’t care, I want him to be safe, and I’ll do anything to ensure that!
“Now, go home!” I order.
“But, Sho-ch…”
“I said GO. HOME!” I shout, and I can thank God for all the noise that stupid guy is making against the door. Masaki sends me a hurt look, but I don’t pay attention, I look back at him, determinate.
When he finally jumps through the window, I let the door open, and the boy falls on me.
“Sakurai-san! Sakurai-san! Are you alright? Where’s The Miracle Boy?” Blurts Daiki, shaking my shoulders and looking from left to right. I push him off of my back and start to scream: “HE RAN AWAY! AND THAT’S YOUR FAULT! IF I DIDN’T HAVE TO BLOCK THE DOOR I WOULD HAVE CAUGHT HIM!” Thanks, this excuse would work.
*****
Well, that’s what I though. I’m in my boss’ office, the boy is behind, his back resting against the door, and my boss is pacing up and down around me. Visibly, he’s angry.
“I’m disappointed Sakurai! Really!”
“Sorry, boss…” I bow my head and almost whisper.
“Swallow your pride, Sakurai! The Miracle Boy is a strong opponent, Daiki would have been a big help!” If he continues like this, I’ll feel sick.
“But boss, I’m the one who…”
“NO! This is your last chance Sakurai! Next time, catch him or you’re fired! Am I clear?”
“…” Just shut up, you old pervert!
“AM I CLEAR?!”
“YES SIR!”
*****
I’m tired and I feel sick. I murmur a quiet ‘I’m home’ as I take off my shoes. The house is plunged in the dark, and there’s no sound.
He’s angry.
He’s waiting in the middle of the living room, alone in the dark. When I stand in front of him, he leaves his sit and look back at me, fiercely. Why is he angry? I should be the only one! He puts himself in danger, and despite all my warnings, he continues fooling around?! And HE IS the one who’s angry?
My nerves can’t take it anymore. I lift my arm and slap his face. The sound resonates in the darkness. Under the strength of my gesture, he falls on the ground. A hand on his hurt cheek, his face shows nothing but his shock. This is the first time that I slap him. In a second, all my anger flows away as I fell on my knees close to him. I want to hug him, to tell him that I’m sorry, that I didn’t want to hurt him. This is our first real fight. I’m stupid, so stupid, why did I do that?
When my hand reaches his shaking shoulders, he blows it away. “DON’T TOUCH ME!” He cries; his hand still on his cheek. He’s hurt, I know he is.
“Masaki…” I call him, but his only reaction is to stand up and run into the bedroom. I run after him, but find only the locked door in front of me. I try several times to open it, even if I know it’s useless since it’s firmly locked. I sigh and slide along the door.
“I’m sorry.” I hear him crying. “I was so scared. I can’t stand to lose you. You were so reckless…” But there’s no answer.
“Masaki…please…open the door…” I beg, my forehead hitting the wood in front of me. Still no reply, just soft sobs. I love you, Masaki. You know that. Every sob crush my heart a little more. I hate myself.
I don’t know how much it lasted, but to me, it seemed like an eternity. I’m sitting against the door, arms surrounding my knees and my head banging on the cold wood in a perfect beat, as if I was counting the seconds that past. Finally the door opens, and I fell on the ground. My heart skips a beat when I see his usual gorgeous and happy face stained with tears, and I feel like dying when I see him stepping over my body, without remorse, not even a look. There’s no word, no scream, no tear anymore. I watch him leaving, a bag in his hand. The last picture I have of him is his back before the door closes.
I huddle up and take a fetal position. Now that I’m alone, in the dark, I allow myself to cry.
This feeling…Is it what people call loneliness?
*****
“Sakurai-san! Sakurai-san!” The kid’s voice is getting on my nerves. Really.
“Hey Sakurai-san!” He’s shaking my shoulders. I hate that.
“What is it Daikon?” I sigh without even trying to hide my irritation.
“It’s Daiki.” He pouted.
“Whatever…”
“Don’t you think it’s strange? I mean, it’s been already one month since the last crime of The Miracle Boy.” He wonders, his fingertips playing on his lips. Maybe he’s 25- yeah, I know, I can’t believe myself; but he truly acts like a kid.
“Don’t you dare…” I start angrily, I can’t help; every time I hear about The Miracle Boy or Masaki, my heart hurts so much that all my fury comes back at the surface.
“Hi!” I turn my head and see Matsumoto standing in front of my desk. He waves a hand and smiles at me, in a concerned way. I raise my body and smile back. “Hi…” I say tiredly.
“So? How are you?” Tries Matsumoto, uneasy. All his attention is strangely focused on the spoon he’s spinning in his coffee. For more privacy, I have offered him a coffee at the vending machine. This way, that stupid boy would stop turning around me with his fanboy’s eyes.
“Tired…”
“I could see that…” Nods Matsumoto.
“I miss him, you know?”
“I know.”
“You really don’t know anything?”
“Nope.” Thanks! And the award of the most useful friend does NOT go to Matsumoto Jun! I sigh again and drink my coffee in one gulp. “Why are you here anyway?”
“Just wanted to see if you’re okay… I should go now…” I nod and he starts to leave, until he stops suddenly and came back toward me before giving me a huge hug. At first I was surprised, but rapidly I hug him back. It’s good to feel liked by someone. We part and he slaps friendly my cheek while nodding. I sigh again as I watch him leaving the station and decide to go home. There’s nothing to do here after all: no crimes to resolve, nobody to apprehend, no Miracle Boy to chase after; just numerous useless reports to fill, phones ringing endlessly for nothing and that kid always sticking at my legs. As I exit the office, I didn’t pay attention to the talk between Matsumoto and Daiki.
*****
I push the door and sigh heavily. These days, I feel like the only sounds I can produce are those sighs, if I don’t count the sobs I do at night. I know I look hopeless, and never in my life would I have thought that I could feel this empty without Masaki by my side. I don’t bother to switch the lights on and drag my feet into the bed room. I fall on the bed and look at the ceiling which is blank just like my mind. And slowly, so slowly, I fall asleep.
I wake up with a start, my phone is ringing. By looking at the window, I notice that it’s already dark outside. I leave the bed with a grunt and pick up the phone. My eyes go wide as I listen to my boss’s screams, and I can feel my heart beating again. The Miracle Boy is coming! Masaki is coming tonight!
*****
“BOSS!!!” I scream, running between the parked cars. I stop when I’m in front of him and try to catch my breath.
“Sakurai! Ah! It’s been a while since I saw you this excited! Great!” My boss says happily. Of course I’m excited, I’ll see Masaki tonight. I hope he would accept my excuses. I don’t really know what I will say, but I don’t care; I’ll tell him all I have in my heart! That the house feels so empty without his laughs, that the bed is cold when I’m alone, that I miss his wonderful smile and his sparkling eyes. Well, that’s what I want to say but…
“Where’s Daikon?”
“It’s Daiki.” My boss snaps back. “And he’s not here. Because an idiot gave him some shrimp snacks and now he’s sick.” He adds, looking severely at one of my men who try to escape, the tail between his legs. Great. This is just great! Masaki will come tonight, and that stupid, useless and annoying kid will not be between us! What a wonderful night!!!
“So? What’s his target?” I ask, impatient.
“That’s the problem. We don’t know. His note says that it’s a courtesy visit. Maybe he will surrender? He would be in the living room according to his note. We have to be careful, who knows what he’s going to do! Everything depends on you, Sakurai!” My boss says, patting my shoulders. I nod and enter in the house. It’s a common house, there’s nothing to steal. Masaki wants to see me and he comes for a ‘courtesy visit’, that’s so him! I can’t refrain myself from giggling. Finally I’ll see Masaki, maybe it was just a month, but for me it felt like an eternity.
I push the door slowly and enter in the living room. My men had followed my orders and stayed outside the house. The time stopped when I catch sight of a silhouette. He’s so beautiful, his body is shrouded in moonlight; he’s standing with his back to me. I hold my breath and walk forward silently; I can feel my heart beating in my temples, as if each beat brought me closer. I stop and hold him strongly from behind. I nestle my head against his neck and take a deep breath.
“I…” He’s tensed, but I don’t care. I have to tell him how I feel. “I’m so sorry. I miss you so much, you have no idea. Please, forgive me! I love you, please come back. I swear I’ll never hurt you again. Please…please!”
He turns in my arms and faces me, visibly shocked. Before I could add something, I feel a punch in my stomach and something hits my head.
Everything is dark…

*****
It’s been already a month since I left our home. I’m so stupid. Why did I run away? Sho-chan hit me, but it’s because he was worried. Why did I run away?! I need to think twice before acting. I miss him.
“You know…” Comes a voice from behind me. I turn and see Nino resting his back against the wall, his arms crossed upon his chest. “If you miss him so much, you can go back. We won’t miss you…” He says a smirk on his lips. I smile back softly.
When I ran away, the only place which came in my mind was Satoshi-kun’s house. I know he’s Sho-chan’s best friend, but he had accepted to take me in and say nothing to Sho-chan, without asking me anything. He even lied to Sho-chan, when he came thinking I was here. I’m grateful for this. During the day, Satoshi is at the station, and I stay at home with Nino. He’s a good guy, maybe a little harsh sometimes, but I think it’s his nature.
“I can’t…” I reply with a sigh. “I can’t go back. I was so childish, and…he…he…”
“He didn’t stop you. I know, you have already said that a million times, maybe two million!” Nino snaps back, his eyes rolling. He leaves his spot and comes toward me, and then he hits softly the top of my head. “Come on, it’s been a month! You’re both adults, right? One of you needs to make the first step, and…”
He stops, when the door opened. Matsumoto enters and pulls out his shoes, nonchalantly. I run in his direction and grab his collar, desperately. “How is…”
“He’s fine. Tired and lost, but still alive.” Sighs Matsumoto, pushing me back gently. He runs a hand through his hair and clicks his tongue. “I don’t understand you. You’re both suffering and stay in this state. You’re both stupid.”
“Love makes you act stupid, sometimes.” Says Satoshi-kun, closing the door. He gave me a small smile and pets my head friendly as he walks by my side. Nino takes him in his arms, and pinches Satoshi-kun’s butt while kissing. I watch them, a little jealous. Sho-chan and I were kissing like this before. Not the butt thing, but it was as nice and kind as them. Sho-chan always kissed me gently, just like a lover would do after a tiring day. And that’s what Satoshi-kun is doing with Nino right now. I miss his embrace…
“What do you want to eat, Masaki-kun?” Asks Satoshi-kun, slipping on his apron. How many times did I space out?
“Nothing…I’ll go sleep.” I say and drag my feet into my bedroom. I’m not hungry, I don’t want anything. I just want my Sho-chan. This idea was fixed in my mind until I fall asleep and it haunted my dreams.
*****
The phone is ringing. I don’t care about it; I can hear Nino picking it up. I sigh sleepily and put my head in the pillow again. My brain is listening the conversation despite my will.
“Yeah…yeah…Hold on please…” Nino is coming back in his bedroom and wakes up Satoshi-kun lovely. Now I can hear two sounds of footstep and Satoshi-kun tripping in the carpet. His voice is natural, as always. At this hour, it must be his work, something about reports due in the morning or something like that. He hangs up and I try to fall asleep again.
“What’s wrong?” Asks Nino.
“… It’s…Sho…” Whispers Satoshi-kun.
Now I’m fully awake, and I run to open the door quickly.
“What happened? Where’s Sho?!” I blurt. I can feel all my body shaking. And I feel sick just by looking at the couple in front of me and their serious faces. Satoshi-kun tried to grab my shoulders but I slap his hand back.
“Masaki-kun…” I wait for the next words. “Sho…Sho is…”
Dead.
Please don’t tell he’s dead!!
“Sho is missing.”
“What?! But…how?!”
“It seems like The Miracle Boy had abducted him.”
WHAT?! But that’s impossible! If I had kidnapped Sho, I would know. And I wouldn’t be here, sleeping alone and hopeless. This must be a mistake!
“It…it can’t be! It must be an impostor!” I say, taking my head in my hands and shaking it violently.
“Masaki-kun, please calm down. We will find him. My boss called me to come at the stati…”
“NO! I know it’s not The Miracle Boy!!”
“Masaki-kun, go back to sleep…”
“I’M TELLING YOU IT’S IMPOSSIBLE!”
“Why?” Asks Nino.
“Because I AM The Miracle Boy!!” I blurt out. Shit, I said my secret. But I don’t care anymore. I would rather go in jail than leave Sho alone.
“I knew it!” Exclaims Nino, a smirk on his lips. But I don’t pay attention. I have to find Sho before something bad happens.
I go out rapidly, ignoring the two others calling my name. I know how I can find where Sho is. Please Sho, please. Wait for me!
After a long run, I finally reach the house. I slam the door and almost trip over a step in my haste. I storm in the bedroom and search for that stupid device. Where is it? Where is it?! Not in the drawer, nor the closet. Maybe under the bed? No. Why can’t I remember where I put it? I take my head in my hands and look around me. I want to cry, the tears are just at the edge of my eyes. Calm down Masaki, calm down. Take a deep breath and think carefully…
Sho-chan Junior!!
I jump over the bed and grab the stuffed animal which had fallen between the bed and the bedside table. Without any remorse I rip it and dig my hand in the cotton’s pile. At last, I find the little screen. It’s a modified GPS. Before I became The Miracle Boy, I have put a chip in Sho’s underwear. You can think this is ridiculous, but: A man can go out without his gun, not without his underwear! I’m a genius!
I press the button, hopefully it still works. I let go a sigh of relief when I see a red spot on the map. There’s no need to wait anymore. Sho, wait for me. I’ll come to save you!
…
I have always wanted to say that…

I wake up slowly, laying down on the ground. My head hurts and my body is cold. I try to rub my face, but the cold metal against my wrist tells me that I’m firmly tied up. Where am I? It seems like I’m in an old factory. The room is totally dark and my eyes aren’t used to it yet. I blink several times and realize that somebody is standing before me and he’s wearing The Miracle Boy costume.
“What the…”
“I’m sorry Sakurai-san!! I panicked! I didn’t know what to do!!”
The kid?! The kid knocked me out?! I’m really hopeless…
“Daikon, why do…” My breath sticks in my throat as he punches me in the stomach.
“It’s DAIKI!! And I’m disappointed in you, Sakurai-san. You were my model! I never thought you would be a criminal!” I can hear how much he’s disappointed, yeah… And I have to admit that I’m the one who’s surprised of my condition. “I thought you were grumpy because you wanted to catch The Miracle Boy, but…I was wrong!” So, that’s why he’s wearing that costume?
“Why?” He asks me. I smile discretely and close my eyes. As I ask myself why I protect my lover, something comes in my mind.
I lift my head and stare at Daiki. With a deep voice I tell him the story Masaki told me, the one about Anne-Marie De La Brume. I repeat each word, without forgetting even one, and I recall how serious he was. As he looks at me, I softly ask: “So, between duty and love, what do you pick?” I don’t wait for him to answer. “I choose love.”
And I feel his fist hitting hard my face. At the same time, I hear a familiar voice calling my name.
Masaki!
“The…The Miracle Boy!” Exclaimed the kid when Masaki stood in front of him. Masaki looks at me, and through the holes of his mask I can see the rage in his eyes. He’s still angry at me?
He looks at the kid, his fists firmly clenched: “How dare you! You’re a dead man.” This is the first time I heard this kind of voice from Masaki. He’s frightening. And the kid is literally scared. He steps backs as Masaki comes toward him.
“Mas…Miracle boy, don’t!” I beg, but it’s useless; the both of them start to run. I pull on the handcuffs, but it’s tied strongly. I hear their quick footsteps pounding on the dusted ground, the scared cries the kid is making as he try to escape, and Masaki’s murdering threats. Then…
“Bong?” Yes, that’s what I heard. I can’t explain what it was, but this sound was followed by something falling on the ground. Something such as several full boxes falling. Then footsteps again. I swallow hard, anticipating the one who’s coming. I know it will be The Miracle Boy. But…Which one?
“I…I didn’t do anything! He was running and BAM! He banged his head against a pole, and then…all the boxes above us have fallen on him. I swear I didn’t do anything!” Said Masaki as he ran towards me. No doubt about this: this kind of childish voice. Like a kid explaining desperately to his fuming mom that even if he was found in front on the burnt curtain with a matches box in his hands, he wasn’t the one who lit the fire. I feel relieved that he’s not hurt and start to breathe again.
He throws his arms around my neck and holds me tight. I’m so happy and my heart is beating so fast that it could explode in my chest. His embrace is crushing me but I don’t care, I would hold him just like that if only my hands weren’t tied. I pull on the handcuffs producing some noise to remind him my situation, but it seems that he doesn’t care. He presses his lips against mine and kisses me like he never has done before. He seems so desperate and I can feel his shaking hands on my cheek, his heart beating fast and his body against mine. His tongue treats mine so gently and yet avidly that I wished for a second, being kidnapped sooner. We break the kiss, breathless.
“I’m sorry.” I say, my forehead against his. I close my eyes, and take a deep breath; his smell, how I missed it. I savor this moment.
“Sho-chan…come back home, won’t you?” He whispers, rubbing his nose against mine. And I simply nod with a smile.

“FREEZE!”
All's well that ends well. Daiki was found unconscious in the factory and arrested. Even if he told about my love story with The Miracle Boy, everybody think he’s crazy. Maybe the bump on the top of his head and his crazy laughs help a bit… My boss is once again fond of me, and lets me work as I want. But, he asked me to investigate on a new case: it seems like two men, wearing feathers on top of their heads and flashy colors- one blue and the other one red, are…well…hum…enjoying…hum…in our cells… Well that’s what our camera had recorded. And I have accepted the case, because the poor and unlucky Satoshi who was working that night was found knocked out behind his desk, the next morning. I named them the SK gang, referring to the letters written on their chests.
Of course, I’m still chasing The Miracle Boy, and as always he’s slipping through my fingers…
Well, it's just a manner of speaking.
“How can I freeze,… when you’re this hot, …detective-san?” He whispers against my ear, his nail digging in the skin of my back.
“Oh God!” Hum…that’s all I can say when he’s riding me like that. My hips thrusts back unconsciously and I bit my bottom lip. We have to be silent, my men are in the next room and the walls are thin. I want to feel his burning skin under my fingers; I want to touch him, to kiss him so badly. But these stupid handcuffs are in the way! I understand now why he wanted to keep them so badly! He’s moving faster, we’re at our limits, I can feel it. He leans over me and our greedy kiss mutters our moans as we come together. We remain still for a moment, the blank and the stars in my mind are disappearing slowly. His head leaning against my chest, he tries to catch his breath. After a long but comfortable silent moment, he lifts his head and asks me:
“So? Who do you love? Masaki or The Miracle Boy?”
“Both.” I smiled before kissing him tenderly.
Fin!
