“What does that mean Sho-chan?!” Asked Aiba angrily, his palm against the door, preventing Sho from closing it, and a creased note in his other hand.
“Aiba-chan…” Whined Sho, coming out and closing the door behind him. “I’m really sorry but I…I can’t!”
“You can’t what?!” The other asked, furious. “It didn’t mean anything? I love you and you love me, so what’s the problem?!”
“I’m a father Masaki! It wouldn’t be good for Nyako to see…”
“See two people loving each other?!” Aiba cut him short.
“See two MEN together!” Replied Sho, hoping that nobody would hear them.
“Ooohh but love doesn’t know about gender Sho-chan!” Said Aiba, moving his finger under Sho’s nose. “And I’m sure you’re using Nyako-chan as an excuse! In fact you’re afraid! You fear I could leave you!!”
“Masa…”
“Sho?” Called his mother from inside the house. “Please Masaki, leave. We’ll talk about it another time.” Begged Sho as he pushed Aiba away. The latter smacked the hands on his chest and forced a kiss. “You asked me yesterday to not leave you, be sure I’ll respect your request, Sho!” Said Masaki as he left. Sho sighed deeply and entered the house.
“Who was it?” Asked his mother. Sho shook his head and waved a hand. “Nothing. It was one of the day care center’s workers.”
“Oh? Is there something wrong with Nyako-chan?”
“No, he just…wanted to ask something. I took care of it, don’t worry.” He smiled faintly before coming back into his room.
A few hours later, Sho was in front of his desk, grading some papers while keeping an eye on Nyako who was playing at his feet. His mother knocked at the door before entering with a tray in her hands.
“I thought a warm and sweet cup of tea would be great.” She said as she put a cup on the desk. Then she petted Nyako’s head and said: “Dear, there are some cookies in the kitchen if you want.” The little girl stood up and left the room. His mother stayed in the middle of the bedroom, her arms crossed upon her chest.
“What?” Asked Sho after he gave up ignoring her. “I think it’s true…” She said with an enigmatic smile. “And what’s true?” He sighed, putting his pen down and sipping his tea. “Love doesn’t know about gender…”
Sho choked on his tea and looked at his mother. Seeing her smile, he whined and smacked his head upon the desk. “I can’t believe you eavesdropped!”
She chuckled and came closer, resting a hand on Sho’s shoulder. “I don’t understand what’s bothering you.”
“I…I can’t. I have to think about Nyako. It could be disturbing for her to see…”
“Two people being in love?” She said with a smile, and Sho sighed again. “Why does everybody say the same thing?” He ran a hand through his hair and said seriously: “I really love Aiba-chan, and I don’t know why it’s so sudden but… I’ll protect Nyako, no matter what.”
“Are you sure that the one you want to protect is Nyako-chan?” She asked softly. “Sometimes you need to…” She tried.
“I said no and that's that!” He said with a harsh tone.

Almost one month had passed and the both of them didn’t meet again. Despite all Masaki’s efforts, Sho always managed to avoid him. The last link that existed between them was Nyako. Aiba always asked news from her, and it was the same with Sho.
“How is your papa, Nyako-chan?” Asked Masaki, sitting on the ground next to the little girl and heaping up some blocks.
“He’s sad. Granny says it’s because he loves two people and can’t chose.” Replied the child, without really understand what she was saying. Aiba smiled sadly. “Onii-chan loves papa?” Aiba lifted his head a little surprised then smiled shyly. “Y…yeah…”
“Nyako loves papa and Onii-chan too”
*****
“Please Sho-chan, just think about it!” Begged Aiba standing in front of the door. “We’re both suffering!”
“Aiba-san that’s enough! Why can’t you understand?!”
“But…Nyako-chan knows we love each other and she doesn’t seem troubled…”
“Please Masaki! She’s only three, she doesn’t understand! I…I think it’s too hard for both of us. We need to stop seeing each other…I…I’ll keep Nyako at home from now…” Said Sho painfully. Masaki stepped back and shook softly his head. “No…” He whispered. “No! You don’t have the right to say that!” He screamed, punching a spot on the door, next to Sho’s face. Sho was surprised by the movement then he pushed Aiba away. “Don’t come here again!” He warned, closing the door. Aiba stuck against the door and banged furiously. “Sho open the door! Sho! SHO!”
Entering the living room while he tried to ignore the screams, Sho saw Nyako sticking her nose against the windows, looking sadly at her Onii-chan.
“Nyako…in your room” He said slowly. The little girl moved back from the windows and looked at her father with teary eyes: “But, Onii-chan…”
“Your room, NOW!” He yelled pointing at the stairs and gave the little girl a start. He regretted his words when he saw the tears running down her cheeks. “NYAKO HATES PAPA!!” She cries as she ran into the stairs. Sho sighed, kicked the wall next to him, and cursed himself.
*****
“Nyako? Come down, dinner’s ready!” Called Sho from downstairs. When anything but silence came, Sho sighed and climbed the stairs, thinking his daughter was still mad at him. He knocked softly on the door and half-opened it. “Sweetie…” He said tenderly, and then seeing that the room was empty he stormed in the room. “Nyako? Nyako where are you?” He called, searching everywhere, and then his heart skipped a beat when he saw the windows wide open.
Aiba turned off the water and grabbed a large towel. He wrapped it around his waist and grabbed another for drying his hair. When he looked at his reflection in the mirror, Masaki could notice that his eyes were still red from his cries. It was unfair. Why couldn’t they be together? He had waited this moment for so long, the day when he would find the courage to tell Sho he loved him. Maybe it was a bad idea? After all, Sho was straight and a father, what’s more. But he said he loved him, didn’t he? And when you love someone, there’s no need to be bothered by what the others could think! Masaki knew he could make Sho and Nyako happy, he was sure of that! At first, he had vanished into thin air because he thought that Sho would be happier with Kunimitsu-san. But he was wrong; she was with him and made him suffer! Masaki would never do that!
Aiba was lost in thought when his phone rang. He dragged his feet into his little living room and picked up his phone half-heartedly. He didn’t have the time to speak as a scared voice came from the other line.
“She’s with you? Please tell me she’s with you!!”
“What the…Sho-chan? What’s wrong? Who are you talking about?” Asked Masaki, totally lost.
“Nyako! She ran away from home!”
“WHAT?! N-No she’s not here but…when?” Said Aiba, grabbing unconsciously a pair of jeans.
“I don’t know! Maybe just after I scolded her. Please Masaki, please help me!” Begged Sho, going into hysterics.
“Of course I’ll help you. I love Nyako-chan as much as I love you. And be sure, if something bad happened to her, I’ll never forgive you.” He threatened before hanging up and slipping into a T-shirt. Then he grabbed his vest and his keys and came out at breakneck speed.
But his searches ended faster than he would have hoped. When he had passed through the front door he saw a sleeping form resting against the wall. Masaki sighed with relief when he recognized the little Nyako. He took her in his arms and held her tight.
“Nyako-chan, do you know how much you made me worried?” He whispered. “And how did you know I live here?” The child woke up slowly and smiled when she saw Masaki. “Onii-chan!” She screamed, wrapping her tiny arms around Masaki’s neck.
*****
Sho stormed in Aiba’s house, out of breath. “Nyako!!” He shrieked when he saw his daughter comfortably sitting on the couch, a cup of warm cocoa between her hands. Cocoa which might spoil the white couch when he held her tight. “Are you alright?” He asked; his hands all over her tiny face. “Don’t ever try to do that again!” He scolded her.
“There’s no need to scold her, I’ve already done it.” Said Aiba, coming out from the kitchen and offering Sho a cup of coffee.
And this time, the cup fell on the ground. Sho held Masaki so tight that the taller had some difficulties to breath. “Thank you! Thank you!” He repeated again and again. “I told you I’ll never leave you” Masaki smiled and suddenly kissed Sho with passion. Weirdly, the smaller didn’t fight back, he even kissed Aiba back with the same force. They only broke the kiss when they heard clapping behind them.
“Nyako has two papas, now!” She said happily.
“If…if you want to…” Said Sho, embarrassed.
*****
Ten years later…
“Nyako? I’m home!” Sho informed his daughter. When he entered the kitchen, he understood why she didn’t answer. The young girl was in the kitchen, cooking while listening music. She smiled when she saw her father and yell, because of the loud sound in her ears.
“DAD! I NEED SOME HELP!”
“Yeah, yeah…I’m coming…” Chuckled Masaki, wiping his hand on his apron and standing behind Nyako.
“What are you two doing?” Asked Sho, loosening his tie.
“Oh, Sho-chan, welcome home!” Said cheerfully Aiba and kissing Sho’s cheek. “Nyako is making some chocolate, tomorrow it’s Valentine’s Day, you know?” Aiba came closer and giggled into Sho’s ear: “It’s her first crush…”
“C-Crush?! Who? When? Where? WHY?!” Choked Sho.
“Dad! I already told you it was not a crush! He’s just a friend and…” Denied Nyako, her cheeks becoming pink.
“Seriously, what’s his name? What kind of work his parents do? Does he work well at school? He didn’t kiss you yet, did he? You should be prudent, who knows what he…”
“What your father is trying to say is…good luck!” Said Aiba, giving Nyako the thumbs-up. “Sometimes, your first love is the good one.” He added kissing lovingly Sho.
“Get a room you two…” Whined Nyako, falsely embarrassed.
