I kind of have an interview! For a job! Doing data entry for contract @ Microsoft for 18 months! It would pay $9 an hour and be full time

Sounds kinda bullshit. It seems like if you end up doing work unrelated to what you want to do, you'd be a lot better off doing temp work at a bank or something, which pays much better.
Yeah I've come to that conclusion too. Apparently the staffing company is known for being a bit of a scam, they rip off both the contractors and their employees. The fact that they might very well be selling my labor to Xerox for like $18 / hr and paying me $9 after their cut is what really gets me. From what Google tells me, that's typical of their business practices.
But there's always that irrational moment of "OMG I got a job offer!!!" Oh well...
On one hand, all things considering, it's not a bad job, I don't think - it may not pay wonderfully, but it sounds like it won't be too difficult, and it is nice to have even a little job security/dependable income. On the other hand, you're right that it seems seriously inconvenient, and that there isn't much benefit for you in particular.
...it's the obligatory year-and-a-half that's really getting me. Otherwise, I'd say, take it.
Commute time is always a kicker....my dad has a two hour commute one-way (if there's no traffic accidents). Of course, he's got benefits that outweigh that a little bit.
I can put you in contact with a friend who is on contract with Microsoft (and has been for a number of years now), not data entry but she can definitely give you an idea of what it's really like.
Microsoft as a company is a huge mess, too. It's just the culture to expect everyone who works there to be a workaholic (and not know it; "oh, I only work around ten hours a day and then an hour or two of email at night. Work life balance is great here!" - actual quote) And then there is the structure of the company itself.... matrix structure, total mess. I'm not sure how much of that you'd get just being contract, but....
