alliterations The rules are, list seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your LiveJournal along with your seven songs.
I like too much music with weird weird letters in the name (I'm looking at you, Beyonce!) and I'm not going to bother.
1. Don't Be Mean - The Raincoats
I've had this song stuck in my head so bad. I kind of can't believe the Raincoats actually existed - they have a sound that always seems more like a tribute to the idea of a bad-ass girl-fronted 70's punk band than an actual bad-ass girl-fronted 70's punk band. Well, according to Wikipedia, they're post-punk, but whatever. Also according to Wikipedia, this song is from 1996, but I repeat my whatever and let it stand.
Anyway, this song is fun because it's a neurotically strung out post break-up song song. It's not about residual heartache or what have you, but just angsting that the fucked up break-up is going to make the singer's ex avoid them forever. It's got the dissonant strings thing going on that I like. And Gina Birch's vocals are so delightfully on the edge of going nuts. It's hilarious, too.
2. Junkie's Promise - Sonic Youth
I don't know why I'm suddenly obsessed with this song. I am not a junkie and do not know any junkies. Sonic Youth is the shit though, and I really like their sound in this song. All sharp edges and distortion coming together in just the right way. And the line "I heard you say, I can't escape myself - but then you did, and now there's no one else" always gives me shivers.
3. Why Don't You Love Me - Beyonce
I HAVE RECENTLY REALIZED THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN NEARLY ENOUGH BEYONCE IN MY LIFE.
My enjoyment of this song is inextricably related to
the video. And my enjoyment of the video is inextricably linked to
this blog post. The combination of obsessive insecurity and self-confidence is appealing. I mean, there's something very... true in this to the experience of women in our culture? Feeling like you're probably pretty awesome but still having this kind of angst because of a culture that so determinedly undermines our self-worth. And her delivery is aggressive and fun.
Gosh, I'm suddenly feeling like I'm not very good at talking about music.
4. Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat
I just listened to this song for the first time the other day. Listening to it felt was like remembering a feeling I've known my entire life. I don't know how else to describe it.
Also, raincoats are a theme?!
5. Viva la Fete - Noir Desir
Woohoo French dance music! This one's got a healthy dose of rock in it, though. It's very driving. I totally feel the tension in this song even though I don't understand a single thing the singer is saying. And she goes full out with the growly screaming which is pretty awesome.
6. Janelle Monae ft. Big Boi - Tightrope
The video features those black-cloaked mirror-faced people from Meshes of the Afternoon?!?!?! (this an artsy short film from the 1940's by a crazy lady who went on to be a voodoo priestess only people who lived with me while I was taking my avant-garde film class and decided to do a paper on it and watched it 50 times in our living room because the only copy was on VHS probably know anything about.) And she's got these great goofy facial expressions and a tuxedo and tap dancing and that amazing ridiculous pompadour thing. And the whole album is apparently a sci-fi epic based on Metropolis?!?! Holy shit!
The song is damn catchy, too. I dig the random ukelele at the end.
7. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
Because somebody put a note on the inside of our counter at work reading "Rah rah ah ah ah ah, romma mah mah mah, gaga ooh la la" GODDAMIT WHY.
I should probably talk about my new job. But I don't really want to go into it. I'm working on the Victoria Clipper, which is fun but I'm pretty jealous of people whose workplaces don't occasionally start rocking from side to side violently and making everyone on them sick.
