Jon and I always fight bitterly over whether Beethoven was Classical or Romantic.  It's one of those things like the Oxford comma rule that makes for good arguing.

I would consider him one of the last of the Classical composers, influenced by Romantic currents, but firmly rooted in the classical tradition. My parents have argued this on occasion, but they would start by saying the Classical/Romantic distinctions were applied afterwards and are broad categorizations not useful in every case. Mom considers him a transitional figure. Dad points to the form evident in his music and considers him classical. You could check Grove's Dictionary of Music and see what it says.

Huh. That's going to bother me now.

Chris and I argue about how to pronounce oregano, coherent, and what constitutes a "cup".
