is an ass-backwards approach frontwards (i.e. with your ass facing back) or is your ass backwards, meaning your ass is facing forward? If it's the second, wouldn't backwards be sufficient?

I've always hated the saying "talking about someone behind their back." Because if you're talking behind someone's back, then aren't you in front of them? Otherwise you'd be in front of their back...

I get the impression that it's not just going backwards, but with the ass leading. So imagine someone hopping backwards with their ass sticking out. To me, that's ass-backwards.

like the confusion with the expression "talking behind your back" (wouldn't that be in the front?), but a hell of a lot funnier. "ass-backwards" unfortunately does not pepper my speech nearly enough :)
