The ony thing I absolutely dread about christmas shopping is the fact that I will buy things for myself constantly. I can tolerate searching endlessly through a million racks and stacks and t-stands, the screaming children that run from their parents, hell, I can even tolerate the lines but I cannot resist buying things for myself. I have the money ( Read more... )

that separate account idea is a good one. i have something like that set up, kinda. after paying tuition, my summer's rent, keeping money for monthly buspasses and a limited expenditure amount, i saved the rest of the money i made from work in a plan in my account that is not accessible through debit (i rarely use cash, so this works well for money management). this way, i give myself limits and i can never dip into the protected savings account while i'm out and about, except from banking online.. and even then, i would feel bad to take too much money out because i feel good about the nice even figures in there! heh. i've also got into the habit of browsing retail stores, then finding replicas of things i like at vintage or thrift stores, and that helps too!

that is a good idea! i once had a separate account for savings in which i put all the money i earned but then funds would arise and i would have to transfer from my savings to my checkings and it just didn't get anywhere. also, the bank would always tell me that if i kept withdrawing money from my savings, they would have to close it anyway. after that, i closed it and just put it all into one. i don't carry checks so i guess i could just have my dad hold onto my debit card but since i have cash handy at all times, i'm pretty bad at depositing before spending. =/

anyway, good for you! i wish i had such self control.

the bank can help you set up an account like that... but you don't have to have your parents or anyone else help you. the bank just doesn't let you touch it until the date that you set for it.
