We live in a fast paced society where everyone's on the move and can't be bothered to look into more. I don't think commercials are entirely to blame (they do share blame) as much as things are getting faster and faster and faster and we can't take slow things anymore. I hate the fact that people use 'u' for you and all the other shorthand ways to write text. I text message using sentences without abbreviations complete with periods! No paragraphs, through.
I don't have a solution for writing double space, but there is a nifty feature in Word where you can double space automatically (don't know if you knew that, likely, but there you go)! Once I found that, it was easy to type essays. I didn't like double space, either. It made things way larger than it actually was and that was especially true if your paper was handwritten (with the bonus of feeling like your hand fell off).
