The restricted hotel lobby has replaced the square or piazza as a public meeting place, and our boulevards, such as they are, are not avenues for the parade and observation of personality, or for perusal by the flaneur, but conveyor belts to the stores, where we can buy everything but human understanding.

Cultural question:

So I met this guy on Saturday and the following greeting went down:

Guy: "Hi. You must be Dr. Lisa."

Me: *smile* "No yet."

Guy: *no smile* "It's an idiom."

Is Dr. *Name* an idiom? I am pretty sure it is not. This wouldn;t be so important if he wasn;t such a smug asshole... so I am super curious. What do you guys think?

I think that one bit of knowledge will get me throught the year without violently harming my very white, priviliged, J. Crew wearing, golf-playing, apolitical classmates.

Ummm, I'm pretty sure I hate all my classmates. And yesterday I figured it out... I think their egos are larger than mine, which is saying a lot.

Also, I think it would be great if people dropped a line for their remedy for heartbreak.
