I second the seasonal part-time work suggestion. Around here, there's apparently a huge deficit of outside bookkeepers - the one we refer to is somewhat competent, and always booked solid. Her angle is that she travels, so she'll come over, fix up your QB file, get paid, and go on to the next person.

I second the escape comment as well, but that's really hard to do when it's your parents.

My issue is that I don't do bookkeeping. I know quickbooks fairly well but I actually really dislike it. :( My off season gig is mostly IRS problem resolution, back year taxes, and audits.

Also, the business isn't slow - it's just that we bill out, so our money still continues to trickle in even during the dry season, which is nice, but the slowdown of the economy means people are slower to pay these days...so I'm doing billing quite often lately...

I really feel like my business is doing great, it's mostly the lack of work from the other two, plus the fact that I can't believe dad let things get this far gone. We are only in our second year of business together so I feel like we're actually doing alright for where we are. We have about $35k out - it's how we make it through the "Dark Hungry Days" here. I also expect that we will receive more money in this next group of clients coming in by Sept and Oct 15th. So it's not that I want to walk from the business, more that I want my parents to man up and be responsible. I'm sick of feeling responsible for them. They keep thinking that they can drain me for money, as if I'm getting money from some secret pot they don't know about - I get money only from the business too

I'm sorry, I had no idea things were this bad for you:( Don't feel like you are obligated to help your parents out with everything, like you said, if they are being crazy with money it's their own responsibility. Hopefully they will see it someday. Why aren't your clients paying you?

I just keep billing them. Between dad and I we have about $35k out in billing that needs to be sent in.
