Wooht! After all the waiting, series four has finally begun! When I first watched it (I've seen it twice now) I watched it with:
My mum, dad, brother, two girl friends and a boy mate (which was great fun). Before watching the ep we had tea and ate gingerbread Dalek cookies that my brother had made (so they were lovely :) ). Honestly, if you usually watch Doctor Who by yourself, go out onto the streets with a "Who loves WHO?" banner and get them to watch it with you- its so much fun to enjoy it with other people.
Anyway! My mum was 'jigging' to the new 'honky' theme tune, my friend Sarah kept yelling at the t.v when the Doctor and Donna kept missing each other, there were many laughs (the 'mouthing everything' scene was a particular tummy tickler) from all of us, everyone thought the Adipose were adorable (my mum wants one) and there was much girly screaming when Rose appeared (Russsel T Davies you sneaky devil) which scared my boy mate. Although the plot was a bit scarce (nothing earth shattering), the characterisation was what truly led the episode. Donna was wonderfully determined, funny, and moving (there were many nameable moments- her grabbing him to pull him towards the TARDIS, a complete reversal of roles, and her face when she thinks, just for a second, that he doesn't want her to come.) I loved the change and sudden.. deepness to the Doctor. He'd obviously taken Astrid's death to heart (though, as my mum pointed out, he didn't mention her when talking to Donna, but mentioned Martha) and become somehow even more withdrawn.
It's annoying in the run-up to a new series of WHO because you read so much on the internet or in magazines that you forget what you read where, but I can remember hearing/reading/etc that Russell has planned a lot more in terms of Donna's character. Personally I think that her wanting to go along with the Doctor has more to it than meets the eye. I also think that the appearance of Rose has more to it too. (My friends were discussing Rose's return and saying how she might be a time agent- have a device thingy like Jack etc. Although I did think at one point that this might be true, though how can if she's in a PARALLEL universe? Surely that messes things up a little. Nope, I have a few made ideas (theory time!) about the sad face she pulled when she turned around:
She's being forced to travel between worlds by... SPOILER
She can't control the transfers
She's dead and is a ghost (this a completely stupid theory not to be considered at all).
Although this series is said to be more funny (which it certainly seemed to be in the first ep) that funnyness somehow makes the emo/angsty stuff seem more edgy. Another thing that came to my mind was the change in how the series felt (similar to Voyage of the Damned). Either I'm going mad or each series has a different feel to it (you can tell what episode goes with what series). Series four is looking to be the best yet, with promises of greater things to come.
