Today is a good day among the Prineii.

My husband, John, is an assistant professor of physics, and he turned his tenure package in today. Getting this package of materials ready was a big huge freaking deal--it fills an entire portable file like this one and includes statements about teaching, research, and service, all of his published articles

Yay, John! That's awesome and a relief and all that.

I still haven't made my third professional sale yet, but I'm thinking that perhaps membership can wait a few more years.

Yeah. I mean, I'm truly trying to remember why I joined, originally. Before, it was kind-of a 'oh, I want to support the community' kind of thing, but I'm becoming much less interested in supporting that particular community. Not to lump everyone together, by any means, but the whole organization is tainted by the lounge discussion.

So I'd stay to be on the Norton jury, and to nominate for the Nebulas, but that's it. And I'm not sure that's enough.

Also, at our celebratory lunch today I described the boob-grab and subsequent SFWA lounge debate to John, and he said "Wow, that sounds really unprofessional." Exactly. I'm not sure SFWA is a professional organization.

Not that it doesn't make a lot of sense to question why you're in SFWA (I question it every time I remember that I'm in SFWA), but SFWA really is not the lounge, and the lounge is not SFWA.
