Reason I love living in Iowa City #98

On Tuesday night I walked downtown to Prairie Lights books and saw Kelly Link read a cool ghost story. Had a nice chat with Kelly, and with Gavin, and treats afterward with velourmane and some of her students, including draegonhawke.

You have *house* centipedes in addition to the regular outdoor kind?!

My, my. Learn something new every day. *adds Iowa to her list of places not necessary to visit before I die*

The Chabon event I went to was sponsored by ASU's creative writing and Jewish studies programs, and when asked what good fiction he's recently read, he cited Kelly Link. And when asked about the experience of finding out he'd won a Pulitzer, he again found a way to give Kelly a shout-out. I love that he refers to genre stuff seamlessly, unapologetically, without irony, without being patronizing.

Also, he's a great reader. Great hair, too.

He does have good hair, now that you mention it.

And he is a good reader. He do the police in different voices, which was great.

One of the 'units' that I'm doing this year in my class is on 'what kind of learner are you', and it turns out that I'm an aural learner. Which is one reason, I guess, that I found his read-out-loud stuff more compelling than I've found his read-in-a-book stuff....

Ah, bugs! You gotta love the bugs!

Thanks for making me green with envy once more...! Especially the walking to and fro part -- we gotta drive everywhere here in Raleigh!

No, I don't gotta love the bugs. I gotta hate the bugs, with lots of shuddery hate.

I made John kill the centipede, which he did with a copy of a CJ Cherryh novel.
