Room of Your Own

So my house is being remodeled, and has been for the last month, and will be for the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile my family and I are living in a tiny rental house a few blocks away. Our house is Our House, and the rental is Baby James's House (because a baby named James used to live there ( Read more... )

I want to hear about writing and parenting too. I used to say I could never work in one space all the time, I bought a laptop because I needed to go from room to room; but that's not going to happen anymore, and I'm going to have to work in my office. I don't know how that'll work for fiction. It's a nice office and the big thing I got to do was to set up a small secretary desk for household paperwork--bills, doctor's appointments, the rent bill for our roommate, all that stuff that takes so much less creativity than writing! Just switching desks makes a huge difference.

But it'll be really interesting to see how I manage in just one room. Although I think it might help a lot to know that if I go out of that room, a small child will attach to my leg.

No, no room of my own -- Heather and I share an office, which is really just a tiny breakfast nook with two desks jammed inelegantly against the walls. The back of her office chair bumps into the side of my office chair when we both sit in there at the same time. It's a little cozy. But I mostly write on my days off, or early in the morning, when Heather's not using her desk, so it's pretty peaceful. And anyway, I trained myself long ago to write on buses, park benches, in a room full of screaming drunk housemates, etc. I don't consider such conditions ideal, but I can roll with them.

When I was at Iowa, my favorite non-house place to write was in the chairs along the hallways in the main library. The third floor is usually good, as it's the least-trafficked of all. Sometimes a few people are studying together and talking, but usually you can grab a chair with a table and sit and write, undisturbed, for hours.

More of a problem for you, given the children and all, but if you need a short getaway...

(P.S. you'd have to turn off your AirPort, though, as there's wireless)

I started typing a response but it got so long I decided just to post an entry in my own journal.

It's neat to hear where everyone else works. Thanks for posting this! I hope you are back to a room of your own soon. Good luck in the meantime!

and you said you didn't have a space regularly used for writing and pretty much only for writing. sheesh. I want square footage on that space in your bedroom, generous square footage. Obviously, the bed part doesn't count. But it can wait until you get back into the rennovated house.
