My stealthy black MacBook has arrived! Alas, the firewire cable has not, which means I have to be patient and not even switch it on until I'm ready to transfer everything from Heart of Gold onto the new computer ( Read more... )

Svartálf, or more specifically: Eöl?

Perhaps Moriquende, or Morben?

I love JRRT's names. BUT I want something dark but not...tainted. Eol comes to a bad end (what is it with the smiths, anyway?).

Luthien goes into darkness...

hmmm.

Okay, I'm heading over to the Encyclopedia of Arda to check out names of items...

See, I'd either name it after one of the people in my ever-expanding braintic universe, or something like "Chyornaya" (Russian for "Black." Sometimes I'll call my cat "maocat," or, when I get really silly, "gatonekomaocat" or something. Catcatcatcat! So, er, not one for the clever names here, I suppose ^^;.)

Maud calls our cat "neko."

Jenn's suggestions, above, are character names from Book Two. Sparks is an old lady pyrotechnist with ashy grey hair and missing fingers...

I have this race called the Adumphra which I have yet to feature in anything. I've named my car, my computer, my computer's external hard drive, and my two virtual Windows OSes after members of their command structure ^^.

I also like "Sparks" because of writing and idea "sparks." It feels creative and positive. :)

Checking in from the road to say:

CYGNUS X-1!!!!

(Cygnus X-1 is a black hole. In space.)

(Okay, okay, fine, I'll admit it. It's a Rush song!!! A really awesome one! The starship in it is named the Rocinante!)

(There's not even a ghost of a chance that you'll name it Cygnus X-1, is there?)

(If Bill Shunn is reading this, he'll appreciate that previous parenthetical comment, even if you don't.)

(Okay, okay, fine, I'll admit it. "Ghost of a Chance" is another Rush song.)

(sigh.)

Nope, not even any Rush song of a chance that I'll name it Cygnus X-1.

If you hadn't already taken "Glamdring," I would have snagged it.

Rocinante is a great name, though I haven't read the book. I was thinking about Gringolet, too.

I usually name my cars after horses, and an old, beat-up one was named Rocinante. It's not a great name for something shiny, new, and hopeful. :)

Other names:
Twilight
Brego
Jiji (black cat from Kiki's Delivery Service)

Actually, you have a lot of great names to choose from already. I just love naming things. :)

I like to keep my names in a series--by that method, since you have Heart of Gold, I guess the new MacBook could be 1) famous spaceships, 2) names of episodes in television series or 3) Neil Young songs...

(Mine are all named for birds, which is somewhat easier.)

Um! Names are hard! I usually name my computers stuffy British sounding names because it amuses me (although currently - Lillian - is much more American Golden Age heiress).

My friend Cleo calls her computer both Fred and Illyria (because sometimes it is nice and othertimes not so much).

Maybe one of the Tolkien god people names (Maiar? I am sick and my brain does not work :( )
