Somehow I had thought we had come farther than this in these recent years, but some things still tell me I'm wrong.
In the February Vanity Fair, Barry Humphries, who hold an advice column in which he performs as a drag queen, Dame Edna Everage, gave this:

People can be such unthinking idiots.

Americans can be so self-centered when it comes to language. We expect the rest of the world to speak ours. I'll have to read your response when it's published.

I've been dying to see "Frida" I need to haul my butt to the theater. It looks simply wonderful.

Thank you, Drew, you're very sweet. I find that as a whole Americans are generally open-minded and... well, unlike that, but it's statements such as those that push us back even as we're still striving forward to be respected.

You'd better get down to see it! ;) Really, I hope you like it, I'm quite proud of it.

I think the real irony lies in the fact that Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in this country. Has he never been to Texas, where knowledge of Spanish is a requirement for employment with many companies? If ignorance is bliss, Humphries must be the happiest fucker around.
