Doctor Who vs. Torchwood: the other man

Sep 16, 2011 17:27

There are many reasons I like the recent seasons Doctor Who better than Torchwood, and they don't tend to center on hatred of Eve Myles' Gwen Cooper. Well, indirectly, perhaps, but I'm not interested in making the Mary Sue argument that may have validity but isn't what has kept me from watching more Torchwood than I already have (first two seasons ( Read more... )

I stopped watching TW, partly because I couldn't stand how Gwen treated Rhys. (And also, the Jack thing - I completely agree that he's totally lost the fun factor of his personality. *Also*, because I love Ianto, and I refuse to watch beyond season 2 for obvious reasons.)

Season 6 of DW, on the flip side, has been such a goddamn disappointment. I was seriously considering writing a whole LJ entry about it myself, lol - I didn't know I had any other fans on my flist though! (Or I'd forgotten, which is very possible, hehe.) The only part of this season that's kept me going is Rory, because he. is. awesome. I feel like "The Girl Who Waited" was the first episode this season that didn't marginalize him - or Amy, who I also like - and actually let them both express real feelings. I know there's a lot of crap online about how Rory is a doormat, but I don't see that *at all*. He's wonderful and an absolute lifeline at this point. Unlike Rhys, who just made me recoil with some sort of secondary guilt.

We'll see where they'll go from here, and I did love River Song's regeneration scene, but all the River-is-Amy's-daughter plot stuff has left me cold.

Yup. I really liked River in season 5 (and all of season 5, really), but I'm kinda skeeved out by the whole I'm-dating-my-mom's-best-friend thing. And a whole host of other issues too.

I haven't watched Torchwood, but Rory rocks.

You might like Torchwood, but it lacks the humor and good energy of DW. Go Rory.

I think I agree with all of this. Early Torchwood really shocked me with its crapness, and I still don't get the decision to strip Captain Jack of his cheeky humour and make him Angsty McEmopants. I get that the character needed more depth and layers in order to head up a series on his own, but ... that's not character depth. Especially when one of the parent show's signature notes is mixing humour in with its horror and drama.

Rory has really grown on me - I wasn't overly fond of his initial characterisation, but it's an excellent performance, and the more we see things from his point of view the more he becomes human and identifiable rather than a cookie-cutter doofus boyfriend. The Girl Who Waited had me feeling terrible for both of them (all three of them?).

Angsty McEmopants!! LOL! Frankly, even if the writing were better, his acting isn't up to drama. Humor, sexiness, singing, dancing? Yes. Srs acting? Not so much.

Yes, Rory has grown on me, too. And I like the complex trio dynamic with the Doctor. Less so the fact that River is Amy's daughter. That's too cheesy for me.
