I had a light-weight mountain bike for the longest time, fully outfitted for city use, but I wanted something faster and didn't want to sacrifice any of the durability and ability to ride over anything that I was used to. I ended up with a cyclocross bike, which is basically a road bike but with more clearance under the bottom bracket and slightly different geometry. I think the wheels are a little wider too; mine came with knobbies that I replaced with slicks, but with two wheelsets you could switch back and forth really easily. It's a Kona "Jake" and I got it for $600 at Recycled Cycles, marked down from like $800 because they were trying to make room for the new models; you might be able to catch a similar sale soon. Good luck!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip! That sounds more like what i want--something that I can ride over stuff but the ability to be faster/lighter than a mountain bike.

Now that I've been to Recycled Cylces, I'm seriously jealous of the Jake. I wish they made one for shorties. :( The smallest one is still too big, even if I changed out the tires to 650 cc.
