I'd recommend going to a local small computer store that does in-house repairs. They're sure to have a cable or 2 lying around that matches yours, and you can try that out, just to rule out it being the cords fault.
If that fails, you could try taping or gluing the cord permanently to the computer. It worked for my Super NES 20 years ago.
At the very least, while you're at the repair place, you could ask how much it'd be to get a new power cord receptacle put in. Some things are much cheaper than you'd think.
It could be just the power cord which usually is around $50 but could be more or less depending on the model. How hot is the metal part of the cord that plugs into the laptop if you remove it after shutting down? It could be the connection inside the laptop getting too hot and melting. Hopefully that is not the case since the connectors on laptops are usually built into the system board. If you like we could stop by and take a look at it before you take it to a shop.
Weird, but that makes me think if anything, it's probably the cord starting to go out. Sounds more like what i experienced with my work laptop then. The actual cord started to smoke one day after having your intermittent problem. Turned out the cat that we have that likes to chew cords had punctured the cord and caused one of the wires to start separating causing the short. If it's not cat related, "wrapping" the cord could also cause that problem after a while.

It hasn't given me any issues today, so I'm not sure what was going on. :-P
