Ummm...The Mudge Boy was weird.

Ok, I just finished watching The Mudge Boy, starring Emile Hirsch.

I'm not sure what to think about it, but I believe I'm a little disturbed.

Emile plays the main character, Duncan Mudge.  I think he's supposed to be 16 or something.

It starts out with Duncan's mother dying of a heart attack on the side of the road. Now he and his father live alone on their farm.  People say Duncan looks just like his mother.

He's a weird kid. Maybe he's a little slow, too. He addresses the chickens by name and keeps one of them as a pet. He brings that chicken with him almost everywhere. The other kids make fun of him but he ends up hanging out with them anyway because he buys their beer. One of them seems like he wants to be friends, but he's still kind of mean to him.

Duncan starts wearing his mother's fur coat to bed but then his dad catches him and puts all of her things out in the barn. One day, Duncan brings his friend over to look at her things and the friend talks him into trying on her wedding dress. And then his friend rapes him...in his mother's wedding dress.

While he's trying to take the dress off, his dad walks in and sees him in it and eventually burns all of her clothes. Duncan goes to his friend's house in the middle of the night "to talk". They kiss and then the friend says he can't see him anymore because Duncan is "a faggot".

Then, the next day, while he's at the store, his friend and the other guys steal his chicken and start calling him a faggot and threatening to hurt the chicken and making fun of his mom. Then Duncan bites the head off of his own chicken right in front of them and goes home.

The End.

It was quirky without being funny. Uncomfortable without being unbearable. None of the characters were completely likable, but I didn't hate them either.

And yet somehow it was a pretty good movie.    I'm totally confused.

Has anyone else seen this movie?
