The Basics

May 04, 2008 12:00

Age: 28
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: Painfully straight
Marked: No
Living: (Once it's settled,) with Sam in his apartment in the artisan district

Appearance: Though Dean would protest vehemently, he looks every inch his 28 years, and sometimes more. He's on the shorter and stockier side compared to his taller, lankier brother, but that's not to say he's short; Sam is just freakishly tall. Years of militaristic training have left him well-toned, on this side of muscular, and completely physically fit, and he looks it. He keeps his blond hair cropped short and out of the way of his green-hazel eyes, no nonsense or fuss. But the part where he looks his age, really looks it, is there, too. In the lines around his eyes when he frowns too deeply or the downward slant of his mouth when he hears something he doesn't like. On good days he seems no more than mid-twenties, which suits him just fine. But on not-so-good days, you wouldn't know where to place him by his appearence; only far beyond his few young years.

Personality: Dean didn't come out of the box a rough-and-tumble, wise-cracking jackass with a sense of humor blacker than tar with a tendency towards kill first, ask questions later. Long years on the road shaped him and gave him warrior instincts, first. His dad taught him rigorous self-discipline that he doesn't always follow but knows how to stick to in the heat of battle; that's second. Third, somewhere along the line, he developed his playful-yet-wicked sense of humor as a kind of shield, making it one of his best unspoken coping mechanisms for the insane, unfair world around him.

Superficially he comes off as an easy-going, quick-to-smile kind of guy who's great to have a beer with. He jokes much more often than he's serious and his sarcasm is honed to a razor fine point. Not to mention he plays good samaritan when he has to, especially around pretty women. In all, Dean comes off as a (mostly) well-meaning kinda guy. Thing is, that superficial surface level is the most the majority of people really see of him. He rarely, if ever, lets anyone get close enough to see what's under the wisecracking tough guy exterior. Dean is not without emotions, though you'd bet he wishes he was. Because those few times he breaks - and Dean does break - he really breaks, flying off the handle in blind rages or even, just once, breaking down in tears born of pain and frustration and utter loss. Only Sam is capable of stirring these emotions, which is why Dean is, above anything else, dead determined to always keep his brother safe. His loyalty and devotion to his younger sibling border on insanity, but hell if he cares.

Abilities/Strengths: Dean is an expert shot with handgun and shotgun alike. Give him a firearm and he can probably use it. He's no slouch when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, either. His father trained him very, very well, and Dean uses a little bit of everything when it gets up close and personal; don't blink, or he'll have you on the floor in seconds. Guns aren't the only weapon he can handle, either - any one of the demon hunting weapons in the Impala's trunk is fair game, and in a pinch Dean can and will make a weapon out of just about anything.

Dean's just a normal human, unlike his brother, so all he's got going for him besides his fighting abilities is his deep set loyalty and his dedication. Not forces to be trifled with, however. His dedication to the family business and protecting Sammy will take him to great lengths just to get the job done, and he saves whoever he can. Once you've got Dean for an ally, you've got someone who's sticking around. If you can make him want it enough, that is.

Weaknesses: While Dean isn't necessarily gullible, he's sometimes a little too quick to believe in the good stuff. Not that he's an optimist, either. It's a tough world and a tough life and sometimes he wants those little breaks. Usually, though, it ends up biting him in the ass, in the form of betrayals or seriously bad pitfalls. And to say Dean is headstrong is to understate the issue almost comically. Dean does what he does and to hell with you and all the rest if you don't like it. It's nearly impossible to dissuade him from a plan if he's sure it's the only way, regardless of any and all other logic and reason. He can be extremely reckless, especially with his own life after the "I'm going to hell in a handbasket" revelation.

Dean's worst weakness, however, is easily Sam. Dean will do absolutely anything for his brother - anything and everything, even at risk to his own life.
