So, a lot of people wanted to know how to get the coloring on some of my icons in my last Roswell post. So, here's a tutorial for the coloring in this icon:
I use PS CS.
I start with
this picture. I crop it and get this:
To make everything pop more I duplicated the base three times. I set the first two copies to screen and desatured the third (the top one) and set it to soft light. I sharpened the desaturated layer twice.
Obviously, this is far too sharp, so I layer the opacity of the soft light layer to about 35%.
The icon is still very bright, so I put this blue gradient to color burn and lower the opacity just a tad so there's not too much blue.
It still looks dull, and kinda pale and dull. So I add a brownish gradient and set that to multiply opacity 67% so that the sky still stays blue and all.
It still looks pale so I duplicate the brown gradient layer and set it to color burn, opacity 43%. This way the pic is warmer.
But now it feels like the sky and Michael's jacket has lost some of the blue, and I'd really like it if the icon was darker, so I duplicate the blue gradient layer and drag it to the top. I keep it on color burn but lower the opacity to 77%.
I'm pretty happy with it, but I feel like the sand is taking away the focus from the sky and the two figures. So I add this gradient, set it to pin light opacity 27%.
And voila! Finished!
And now I never want to write a tutorial again. *is dead*
