Why She Fights (4)

   Home sweet home away from home turned out to be several shipping containers, stacked two high, on an open spot of asphalt by a railway line.  A scaffold and ladders lead up to the "second floor".  Inside, there was only two cots by each wall and a privacy curtain for a chemical toilet in back.  Small windows in the doors and in back provided ( Read more... )

Have to love the Three Musketeers moment. And the friendship between those three in general. Although I never much liked Kennedy, it's nice to see her written as something besides a bitch.

Keep it coming, pal. It rocks. (That is a firmly worded request, in case it might be misinterpreted.)

Thank you for writing Kennedy as a sympathetic character. I just love the kiddie pool and inflatable palmtree.

This is going so great. Please keep it coming.

"A stone," Buffy said, "somewhere shady and still. Under a willow tree. That's all I needed. That's all we need." YES!

> "You mean, buy a plane," Rona said.

I was getting ready to point that out as a tyop, and suggest "airliner" as a fix but you had Rona speak up for me. :)

Very enjoyable as usual. It's nice seeing the other characters. And somewhat unusual to see a sympathetic portrayal of Kennedy! :-)

Some typos:

don't the meaning of --> don't know
Rona bet that outfit costed as much --> cost

And, for what it's worth some IMHOs:

without having a nigga moment. --> I think you might be rather brave to use that phrase! See here and here for what happened to someone else with a less potentially offensive phrase and there have been others.

"I've seen Holland," Kennedy said. "A lot of conquests. Not a lot of occupation, though. --> I wondered if it should be "I've been Holland"?

I'm portraying Rona as being from the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago's South Side. That implies a fairly low-income, urban African-American neighborhood where the n-word is used as part of the vernacular. Rona's grams actually did raise her not to use the word, but the very sparing use of it is likely. The "moment" Rona refers to is a sarcastic concept taken from the black-written "Boondocks" comic strip. A "nigga moment" is when two young black men act like stereotypical over-aggressive idiots over some petty dispute.

Kennedy's "I've seen Holland" is, of course, a sly reference to having seen the many "dykes" of the Netherlands. ;)

I don't know how I missed this story when I did the big 'trawl through your archives for more awesome'. Way to take fairly minor characters and not only flesh them out a little but make them real in a way that is like nothing else I've ever read. Holy shitballs, this is one wicked story.

Is it wrong to be considering holding beta services hostage in return for more of it? Or in case you don't negotiate with terrorists, offering to airmail you a packet of Tim Tams that never runs out??
