Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about your gran, although it sounds like a good sign that she's back to complaining so quickly. My gran has a thing for food, so when she came out of theatre and asked her first question ("what did you have for your dinner?"), I knew she would be ok. Fingers crossed your gran will recover quickly too.

As for your stepbrother, that sounds like a pretty major botch to me! I hope he's considering taking action agains the botcher.
