Wishful thinking

Today I would like to be watching old Sinbad movies. You know, the ones with plasticene monsters and genies who wore hareem pants. They occasionally came on telly on Sunday afternoons when I was growing up and I always loved them.

Nostalgia aside, I'd just like to remind everyone that tomorrow is Pancake DayHas anyone ever seen an actual pancake ( Read more... )

I rather liked Jason & the Argonauts over Sinbad- I think they really pushed the boat out with the effects on that one.

I have my Netto Batter Mix, some eggs and some lemon juice so I'm all prepared for tomorrow. I'm hopeless in the kitchen, so its easier than making the batter from scratch.

Mmm.. Pancackes

I didn't see Jason until I was 19, so it lacks hazy golden childhood memory halo.

Batter mix? I take your point, but pancake batter is among the easier things to make from scratch in the kitchen. I'm with you on the lemon and sugar though. Anything else is just a bit wrong.

Nutella AND Philadelphia, in little half-teaspoon blobs, all down the middle of the pancake. Oh, yesh.

Any film with monsters created by Ray Harryhausen scores high in my book.

Also: ooh, pancakes! Thanks for the reminder :)

Cheese! I forgot about pancakes and cheese! We have a camembert that is being highly uncivilised and stinking the fridge out. It can go in a pancake.

We're having mushroom strog. too.

You can't have pancakes without cheese. And dill.

I feel I should throw my patented Best Pancake Filling Ever (other than L&S) into the mix here.

Take 1 tub of mascarpone. Beat it up a bit, and add the juice and zest of a lime, and a tablespoon of caster sugar, and beat it up a bit more so everything is mixed in well. Add more sugar if you think it needs it. That's it!

I've been in several pancake races and have watched many (I even won a teacloth at one when I was little). Most of them were at church (which explains the teacloth).

Woo for pancake day!

Aha - so it's churches keeping this tradition alive. Do you have to toss the pancake throughout the race? Are they quite long? Are you allowed to put obsticales in?

Well, our church was full of middle-aged housewives, elderly people and little children, so there wasn't much in the way of obstacle races! We had to toss the pancakes throughout, and I seem to remember that if you dropped it you got disqualified. I'm sure I remember a pancake race from school once (only with pretend pancakes, which were actually the little beanbags we used to play catch with) which had obstacles. I think that if you've mainly got people who actually like running around, then obstacles are a good thing! It wasn't such a great idea at my church!

I seem to remember it was only as long as the church hall, which was built in 1960 and was quite big, but having it in a street would be more fun!
