I found a place in Van. where in exchange for 10 hours a week of cleaning/cooking and general household chores, I can live there Rent-Free

At minumum wage ($8/hr), 10 hours a week at a Real Job would net you 80 bucks... so you're looking at "paying" $320 a month for this place. Depending on where it is, it could be worth it.
But frankly, you can get more than 10 hours part time, and at more than 8 bucks an hour. Almost nobody here pays absolute minimum wage. Even things like McD's start at 8.25 or so.
My approach to this would be: If that's the only place you can find to live, do it, but don't look at it as long term at all. Take it as a roof over your head, and get out ASAP. The whole thing sounds rather sketchy to begin with, and I'd honestly rather you get a regular place to live.
If I had space, I'd put you up no sweat... but I don't, and likely won't for 2-3 more months.
If you end up in Edmonton, I'll have to hook you up with mah Chloe. She's made of shy, awesome and f'n HOT.
I'm masterful? WTF? Do I need a riding crop and handcuffs now?
That's about right. You normally get paid every 2 weeks. And you have to work before you get paid. So it could be 2-3 weeks before your first payday, depending on when you start.
I could line you up with some fairly physical temp work (fire/flood restoration cleaning and the like) PDQ. They pay every week, but even then you'd be waiting 2 weeks for money... because you get paid at the end of the week after you work. So work you do till Friday the 7th, say, gets paid Friday the 14th.
Money's a bitch, but after the 3 week wait, your pay will come regularly.
I'd still be careful, this guy sounds even more sketchy than me.

My dad said that if I got a (real) job it would probably take about 3 weeks before I get the first paycheck -_-;
