I read this a few months ago and overall it irritated me, as well. I totally get it.

Came here to say the exact same thing, except in my case it was a few years ago.

Heh

In the end, it just felt all so dreary and depressing and I guess I don't read for that....

I was particularly annoyed by the sudden stealth depression at the end - just as I thought it was picking up, the author reminded me that all the characters were always doomed to sing on with thorns stabbed deep into their hearts. Oh. Right. Not a happy ending in the conventional sense, then.

Thorn Birds is one of those things that enraptured me completely...
When I was fourteen. Looking back all I can think is "There are 3 billion men in the world, young lady, and most of them are not self centered jackasses who have taken vows of celibacy. MOVE ON."

Exactly. At the time it seemed tragic. Now, I look at Meggie and want to shake her.

I liked this when I was younger, but as I've matured I got more and more irritated with the characters. I want to tell Fee to get over herself, Meggie that there are lots of other fish in the sea and Justine to stop being a sullen pill.

I read it when I was 21/22 and thought, "What in the world is all the fuss about? This is just another trashy romance."
