Although the iPhone's bill is pricey...tons or Apps are free, there is ways to make ringtones, AND it stores and syncs all your contact info with your mac. Thus if your phone is lost, stolen, or servers go down....you are protected. everything is synced to your MAC. Calendars, contacts, apps, music and so on. I have had zero problems with my phone so far.
I've been contemplating an Android phone, as well.... or maybe go back to a blackberry. G1 or or perhaps the Curve. Sidekicks have suited me well since 2003... but its time to move on. :( The phones are so totally unreliable.
We just had to break our contract with T-Mobile because their service is so bad out here that we literally couldn't even use our own phones in our own apartment.
We switched over to AT&T and iPhones...
Needless to say, it was still a complete rape and not fair.
It was over $400 just to break the contracts with T-Mobile. Plus then we had to pay... to get iPhones, activation fees, first month and a half bill for AT&T, plus the last months bill for T-Mobile...

Your problem sounds similar to the article above... time to ditch T-mobile.
