Never put off for today what you could have done yesterday. Tonight is when I had planned to write about the upcoming celebrations in Uijeongbu that will mark the official opening of 'Culture Street' - including some photos I've taken since this past summer - but during my last class of the day a student slammed the classroom door on my fingers ( Read more... )

If my personal experiences are anything to go on, middle school girls in Korea are extremely hard to impress!

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your fingers.

I hope you gave the student many, many lines. ;)

No lines for that student, but I did make her stay after so we could talk about the issue. I think I made it clear that what she did - trying to keep another student from leaving first - is not a decision that students get to make and, furthermore, results in dangerous behavior that can (obviously!) injure others.

Thanks! One of my fingers still has a vivid red coloration to it and the tip of my thumb tingles when I apply much pressure, but all the other fingers are back to normal.

She was trying to keep another student from leaving before her. In her attempt at blocking the doorway she also pushed me out of the way and kicked the door closed, which is how it caught my hand. I made her stay after class and her had a talk about the authority and safety issues that go along with what she did. (i.e., The teacher decides who gets to leave first, not students; and pushing people is a sure way for someone to get hurt!)

That class is made up of fifth and sixth graders, though I teach all different levels. To be fair, it was more of an accidental push than a deliberate one -- she just wasn't paying attention to anyone else around her. (A good analogy might be comparing it to a sports foul. A player might be impeded or hurt by another player's actions, but most of the time it's the result of accidental contact.)
