Dancing in Daegu

Two weeks ago I attended Diana's wedding in the southeast Korean city of Daegu. Or, perhaps more accurately, I showed up two hours after the wedding started and caught the reception party -- which I feel incredibly guilty about. Ignoring the fact that I am a horrible friend for the moment, one of the things worth mentioning is that her wedding ( Read more... )

Oh Paul, so many of your stories are hilarious! How do you get into these situations? XD

"well, if you're going to shag her you better shag her multiple times. Don't just do it once and leave." That lady WINS. Obnoxious, yes, but too funny!

I get the sense that you should be veeery careful when talking to women in Korea. :P

I really have no idea how these situations develop. They're certainly awkward at the time, but do make for interesting stories afterward. :D

She later came up and apologized for being so blunt. I believe she said something about how it was pretty normal for Australia but worried how an American would take it. Which was also humorous.

You know, your comment made me think of visiting a discothèque in Rhône-Alpes and being told to avoid any woman over 25. The reasoning was that they were all prostitutes, which was kind of odd to hear from my 15 year old friend/hostess. Should I just assume that I'm going to meet at least one strange woman on future overnight trips?

That's a good point. I only met one other person at the wedding who wasn't a resident of Daegu at some point in their life, so it seems there may have been some extra history involved. Either that or I just have bad luck at meeting 'normal' women these days. ;)

To share in the awkwardness?

By the way, I found a hamburger restaurant at the Yongsan Mall today that played swing music the whole time I was there. Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone ... it was great. Maybe we can go together some time?

Your guess is as good as mine! I'm a quiet person, so it's not like I draw a lot of attention to myself. At least I didn't end up with a second stalker. ;)

You tell your stories with so much understatement - that's the nicest way I've ever read someone say "This jerk was whining about Korea, so I blew him off once I figured out he wasn't gonna quit" - it makes them all the funnier to read.
