Jeongneung: Part One | Part Two

Three weekends ago I made a trip out to the royal tombs at Uireung, and the weekend after that I made another voyage south from Uijeongbu to visit the tomb at Jeongneung. You're right that Anglophone North America is not particularly well-endowed with historical sites like these. Then again, this tomb is for a woman who lived 100 years before Columbus ever set eyes on the New World ... so Korea does have a bit of a head start. ;)

And here I was under the impression that I haven't been doing much traveling recently, either! Will you have time for a weekend trip before the end of the month?

A lot of 'historical' sites in Korea are not all that historical because they're reconstructed sites. I don't know if that applies to this particular location in the post, but a lot of temples and palaces in Korea were damaged and/or destroyed during the Japanese colonial period, and during other times in Korean history. I've only been to a few temples where I actually felt like I was looking at buildings and structures that are centuries old. All too often the pain looks fresh, and other details look way to modern and in good condition for them to be 'historical'...
