i went 1-6 minus a gazillion in north salem yesterday. being that this was my first really shitty tournament, i'm not that upset about it. being that i ended up as the bottom seed in d2, i had an easy shot at hitting 1200 for albany, but it didn't happen. not even close ( Read more... )

bad splits in North Salem david_b_lewis December 12 2006, 00:36:18 UTC
Sorry you had the bad luck in the B group. The splits were different in last month's tournament there.

Your post raises two of my pet peeves:

- where are all the 1200-1300 players? There seems to be a big gap there.

- tournaments should have inter-division games so that you wind up playing the N people closest in rating to you, or at least play a few games out of division.

That's an idea I've been thinking about lately. Haven't thought up of a way to do it yet, but I think it would make everyone happy.

Well, if e.g. Division 1 and 2 had odd numbers of players, then in every round the extra players would match off together. More complicated: middle divisions also play a match against the next one down.

The scheme fits into current bracketing arrangements; e.g. "player 8" in a section is really the player from the other section whose turn it is to play out of division.

I had earlier raised the idea on CGP, mentioning that the baseball season seems to use a similar idea.

i didn't have any problem with the splits in North Salem...in fact, it was preferable for me...just would have been nice to have been able to have won a couple more games. i honestly don't think all of my losses were a result of being outrated by opponents. yes, there was a big gap, but not too unusual for such a small field of players, particularly one that had several unrated players and several fairly new to the game.

as far as tournaments with inter-division games...and i'm not going to get into any fancy formula stuff here, but i could see this working out if one did an "open"-style tournament in a simple bracket pattern based on rating, where winner of this plays loser of that, etc., and use final standing groups rather than initial ones to award class prizes, etc. i don't see any reason why new formats shouldn't be at least experimented with, although i am more than happy with all of the existing ones.
