It's only a few years before people start realizing that Caroline still looks seventeen, and she's getting tired of living with her mom (like, she loves her, she's glad they're finally at a good place in their lives, but her mom asks a lot of questions about boys she has over, and sometimes she just wants to get laid without her mom asking about it). Caroline doesn't really know what to do, though, so since he helped her out so much when she first turned she asks him to help her start over. They pick northern California, because it's beautiful and far, far away from Mystic Falls, and he takes her out there and teaches her the best way to get into open houses (you have to find the ones with signs that say "Come on in"; appointment only doesn't cut it).
