The Antikythera mechanism has been in the news recently, having been studied, reconstructed, and finally understood as a work of engineering 1700 years ahead of its time.

I hadn't consciously remembered Heron of Alexandria, but his Formula is part of the high school geometry canon.

I'll be even more impressed if they figure out how the Claw of Archimedes worked; I saw an ancient engineering special that didn't manage to work it out.
