You're facing the classic choice: Give up doing what you want to do in favor of "Career Advancement" and more pay, or be satisfied with the pay grade and stick with the part of the job that's intellectually stimulating.
My experience: Unless you really enjoy learning to manipulated people socialogically, the "enabling" part of things is tough to make happen. Too often a good technical person is absolutely ruined at being a mediocre supervisory type. It's not the same skillset. Why the American view is to promote technical types to manager types is beyond my comprehension.
