That's a grand poem, though I have to admit that I have mixed feelings about Goethe (though on the whole I think I prefer him to Shakespeare - oh no, the heresy!)

What are your mixed feelings about Goethe? I'm v. curious now!!

I am not ready to say that I prefer Goethe to Shakespeare, although I have learned to love Goethe a lot more since taking this 19thC Song seminar. The _Wilhelm Meisters_ novel is so interesting to me; one of the professors at Princeton gave us a general summary of the novel a few weeks ago and now I want to read it very badly (he didn't tell us the ending).

I really can't imagine loving Goethe more than Shakespeare. There is so much to Shakespeare that is so wonderful, not the least (in my opinion) being that Renaissance conception of the world around him, which comes through in his poetry and in his plays (same thing, if you ask me!). I wonder what a novel by Shakespeare would be like...
