Thoughts on John Hughes, Celebrity, Mediation

As another famous person dies, I see once again, many of my friends lamenting. And again it feels foreign to me. I loved Hughes' movies, and as my roommate will attest, I could watch many of them everyday of my life. I think a lot of it is the learned behavior of group conformity. I was brought up in it, and it took effort to stop looking up to people just because they were on a cultural pedestal. There's also the psychology of emotional and time investment, and the para-media which covers the people in the media as if they were exceptional, no matter how banal the accomplishment ( ... )

This was a great look at the ideas, so thank you.

Hughes was odd in that he was trying to convey some popular idea, but also shaped it. One guy I know commented that "his unrealistic view on romantic love has housed thousands of shrinks", and I can see that.

Your conclusion is most important, though. We can't help but be shaped and influenced, but like with what we eat, buy, etc. it matters to be aware of it in origin, practice and outcome.
