The two atheist related question/comment I get the most are variants of "If you don't believe in a god, how can you have any morals?" and "Stalin, and Hitler were atheists and look at what they did"...so that gives you an idea of the default setting people have of atheists.

And to your last question...no we can't because the vast majority of people have an invisible friend with a severe hate on for "others".

Gays aren't American (TM), but are bisexuals still ok? plutopsyche October 7 2009, 23:54:43 UTC
No option for "fuck it, I'm cool with all of these people"?

If you go to the article here's actually a link to the research paper in question.

The article is not distinguishing well between agnostic and atheist, and they are *very* different. Article fail.

In what way is the difference important to the research done?

'd also point out that from a practical stand point they aren't very different, in fact most atheists I know of including militant ones like say Richard Dawkins and Penn Gillette are also on public record as being agnostic to one degree or another..in other words many atheists are also agnostic.

Agnostics tend to be more open-minded and held with less suspicion than Atheists. Atheists tend to be more certain, to /feel/ more certain, usually through "logic", about what they believe or don't believe. Also, atheists tend to have little or no ability to have respectful discussions on the matter. Gillette, case in point. These are legit distinctions, and this could seriously skew research. I know more than one person that has an extreme difference in approval between these two groups, myself included.
