It's definitely an "is"...

Last night I was walking down broadway when these two girls stopped me.
"Excuse me," one of them said, "do you know where the Heights are?"
"Sure, The Heights is right over there," I replied, pointing at the large blue sign.
"They're on this street?"
"Yes, yes they are."

Oh high school students... The Heights is SO not a plural noun.

columbia, life, silly quotes

I was once asked by high school students if I knew where the West End was. I wanted to tell them to go home, take off their uggs, kiss their parents goodnight, and go to bed.

If this story is true, why did you opt to fuel their ignorance and tell them that they ARE over there? If you knew it was not a plural known, you should have told them. Quell the ignorance of today's youth, my boy!

I tried the first time to no avail. I guess my tone of resignation didn't come across so well.

my favorite thing that stupid illiterate people who should be shot do is when they treat the drugs as in I do drugs as a plural whose quantity can be manipulated. Observe:

"I'm worried about Billy. He does too many drugs!"

yeah, it wouldn't bother me either if all my friend Billy did was a lot of heroin, but man, heroin, caffeine, and a glass of wine with dinner? that's where I draw the fuckin' line.
