The original holiday was a midwinter feast, Yule. The christians plonked their holidays on top of the heathen seasonal festivals in order to convert them. Easter, was of course Ostara, a spring festival. the 25th of december was associated also with the birth of Mithras, the bull god. Yule (I think, this isn't backed up?) was celebrating the return, or rebirth of the sun. Thus, it was a logical place to put it.
Sun God, Son of God.... not much difference. LOL!
