It's funny, I thought I left for good after I graduated, and I did.

But going back for a few short trips a few times since 2010, I can see the appeal of The City, especially as an artist (photographer, calligrapher). In the ideal case, I would be so rich that I can afford a small studio in Brooklyn. Ah yes, we can dream.

In the ideal case, I would have the same in Hong Kong, but that's another dream...

One of my colleagues and occasional client out here in Rockland is a commercial and fine arts photographer. As you're well aware of the massive disruption digital photography has been to the industry, and carnage it has wreaked on Pro Photographers. It's rather like the dislocations visited upon Graphic Design with the advent of Digital publishing fifteen years ago. She had to shutter her New York studio and work out of her home up here in West Nyack. Her rent was brutal and her corporate work was drying up as her clients gave mid line and high end digicams to Julio in the Mail Room to do their corporate headshots. And it may not have been as good as her pro stuff, it's hard to compete against what clients perceive as "free."

But of course we pay in other ways.
