Got a job tip for all you hackers.
A week ago, I had an interview with a downtown Seattle start-up called
SourceLabs. They've got about eighteen employees and have just celebrated their first birthday. They're a company entirely based around open source--Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl, the names nerds know and love. Being a big proponent of open source software myself, I was quite interested to see what it would be like.
They have a nice office, nice computers, and a minimum of furniture. Like I said, it's a startup, and they know what their priorities are.
The interview process was a bit rough, but I got through it. They've got smart people there, I have to say, and they gave me some challenging problems. By the end of the day, I was still sitting there, and so they made me an offer right away... and as extremely flattering as that was, I declined it. I couldn't say why at first. The pay, vacation, and health benefits all seemed wonderful. It was just a feeling, an instinct. After thinking about it for a few days, I realized that I wouldn't enjoy it because it doesn't match what I, personally, want to do. What they do is mainly taking calls from customers, tracking down bugs, and fixing them. They contribute their fixes back to the projects as patches, trying to match the coding style and so forth of the project. I prefer jobs where I get to write entirely new things, and where I have something to say about the design. Also, there was a certain amount of pager duty involved, and my time outside of working hours is increasingly precious to me.
They were rather crestfallen that I turned them down, and tried to change my mind. Apparently they've been looking for good people for a while now, and rarely find folks smart enough to satisfy them. When they realized my mind was made up, they asked me if I had any friends I could recommend. If any of y'all think this sounds good to you (and they do seem like great folks to work with), you'll find details
