I do not think it is selfish or narcissitic to skip the wedding when you cannot be happy for your friends. I would have preferred that a friend unable to celebrate with us stay home and celebrate with us a different day. They are not selfish to want their friends to celebrate with them.

We each do as we can. If you cannot go with love in your heart, it is kinder to them, and to you, for you to not attend.

I hope things look up soon.

I can understand your feelings. I think a little white lie woud be better way, if the couple isn't very close to you and you're not sure they would understand your point.
