Attempts at bento items

Jun 09, 2008 17:41

Lunch is getting boring for the kids so I decided to try my hand at bento box lunches for them. I didn't take a picture of the bento box because it was boring but I did take a picture of some of the items that I threw in there.

Deformed bunny eggs )

Is there a reason you need to peel them that fast? x.x;;;

Hee, so cute! That's gotta take some time and patience. Such a dedicated mommy~~~

It's gotta be hot for the egg mold to work supposedly so if I don't peel it fast, the egg will cool down before I can get it into the egg mold. Well that's the theory anyway. I've only used it once so I guess I have to learn by trial and error. I'm horrible at peeling them fast - when I peel it the shell is pretty much stuck to the egg already and I end up messing up the actual egg hence deformed bunny.

I got tired of making sandwiches as much as they got sick of eating them lol.

On my list!!! I hate hot dogs myself but I think the kids will probably like it - I'm just confused as to which hot dog type will be best. Haven't had time to figure it out. I'm wondering if I should do regular american hotdogs or go out of my way to go to japanese supermarket for special sausages. Or maybe I should just try regular american ones and see how it goes.

Btw I tried making one of those japanese cucumber dishes (kyuri - I think that's the name of the cucumber) and the recipe I used came out awful! Still on the lookout for a good recipe. I love that dish at restaurants. Would be great if I could make it. I just realized that my local supermarket had it after I had already bought it at the Japanese market >.>

yep yep the hotdog octopi should be easier to do :) or make shapes from the tamago pan. my hostmom would usually get those microwavable mini shumai and other frozen ministuff and etc to fit into the bento box. can put some potato salad into a small cupcake wrap. i guess its pretty cute for kids to have a bento box..i just thought my box was so small i could eat it within 4minutes.

Ah I never thought about making shapes with the tamago stuff - good idea. Will the shumai get really gross? Microwave stuff gets nasty/stiff if you don't eat it right away usually.

the problem was it was a bit cold by the time it was lunch it was still tasty (espeically since i was starving by the time it was lunch) but that is of course the preference for your kids...but then again that is what the bento stuff is all about. i think since you basically shut the box off until its lunch, the warm condensation moisture gets trapped within the whole box itself so nothing really dries up because of that trapped moisture. in terms of what u learn in training class about heating/reheating restaurant ettiquite/rules and trapped moisture/bacteria...i don't think its the healthiest maybe?? but i've never heard people getting sick from eating like that since it is a habit of japanese people to leave food out as well...

usually my hostmom also put things under a piece of lettuce (an alternative to the cupcake wrapper) and used a cherry tomato as decoration as well, so everything was edible.
