Of Paperwork and Big Announcements

Paperwork. If there was a task everyone disliked, Magnus included, that would have to be it. No one with an ounce of common sense would like doing paperwork. It was long and didn’t serve any other purpose than making government officials happy when they audited one of her Sanctuaries. Of course, she wanted to keep her impeccable reputation, which ( Read more... )

She'd play it cool. It wasn't her mother's business who she slept with anyway. Except she really liked this one and she kinda wanted her mother to be cool with it. It would be annoying if she wasn't for some reason. Ashley couldn't think of any reasons why her mother would Object to Henry of all people. But mom was weird sometimes. So, she'd play it cool. Maybe Mom would just...not notice. Yeah. Right. Well, whatever. She'd drop off her paperwork then leave.

Hell, mom always knew what was going on in this place. she probably already knew.

Ashley rapped on the door of her mother's office before pushing the door open. "Mom? I have the armory inventory."

Helen Magnus looked up as soon as she heard the knock on her office door and smiled when she recognized Ashley. She had just been thinking about her. Funny how things coincided sometimes. Observing her daughter as she walked to her desk, Helen thought about her life outside the Sanctuary. Truth was, as much as she was happy that Ashley was helping her with her organization, she couldn’t help but feel that she was holding her back. Most young women her age went out with their friends and had boyfriends. She was fighting abnormals with her mom. That should hardly be her priorities.

Leaving the thoughts aside, Magnus noticed the pile of paperwork in Ashley’s hands. “Thank you, darling,” she said gratefully. Another thing she could strike from her list. “Is there anything urgent for us to buy or can we stand another week? I already have a rather expensive order to make for the abnormals on Level 2.”

Ashley thought for a moment. "Getting low on some of the tranq rounds for the mid-caliber guns. It can wait a week, week and a half with normal operation but I wouldn't feel comfy going longer than that. They take a while to ship in, and I don't want to go chasing something huge with a .22."

Cool. She was chill as ice. She could even make casual conversation. "What are we getting for the critters on Level 2?"

“Well, it’ll have to do,” Helen sighed as sat back in her chair. “I need medication for the Stenopelhabbilis. He seems to have contracted a fever of some sorts, and we’re low on nourishment for the Seroslugs who came in from Tokyo. They require a particular form of fungus I can’t find anywhere.” She looked at her daughter, who seemed particularly relaxed. There was no reason why she shouldn’t be, but Helen was her mother and it was her responsibility to notice her daughter’s change of mood. She decided it was probably nothing, but she could still ask her how she had been, without sounding to motherly. “You’ll have to find something else to do this week, and let’s cross our fingers for a small respite,” Helen declared playfully eying Ashley’s reaction. “I haven’t even asked you how you were! How are you darling?”
