Everyday the members of my English class hastily pick on one kid for how he dresses (teacher included). It takes about 20 minutes of class and frankly, I wouldn't have noticed if they hadn't started making a big show out of it. He usually wears a Ski-Doo hat and a t-shirt. as someone who has sat through many many english classes (english major, go figure) i can tell you that sadly this is pretty common. i myself was the focus of such gestures quite often back when my hair was blue. from what i can tell, this behavior is the academic equivalent of a brightly colored sports car, namely it stems from the protagonists own insecurities. don't let him get rid of his hat if he tries, if you start bending to everyone else's will now, they'll never let you stand up again.

aww, thank you. it wasn't ever bad for me though, my profs usually stuck up for me.

side note: you might be the one person who can appreciate that i've had zappa's "cosmik debris" stuck in my head all day. i can't get past the "is that a real poncho, or is that a sears poncho?" line.
